Just in case there are people jumping into the forth coming Marvel Family play in New Ages I wanted to lay out some information regarding Shazam and Captain Marvel in terms of Freddy Freeman known to most of the Marvel Family (namely Billy and Mary) from the Wizard as The Power Thief.
Freddy’s history is slightly different from the canon history. There are elements from the Trials of Shazam that play heavily from it. So it doesn’t change things drastically but at the moment he isn’t as close as he was with Billy and Mary as he was in canon history, nor is he close with the wizard Shazam.
Freddy did find himself an orphan when during an accident in Fawcett City involving Shazam and a foe that resulted in him becoming disable and his grandfather losing his life.
Rather than having powered shared with Shazam, Freddy acquired a benefactor who began to reveal that there was more to the world than he knew. It took some time but Freddy came around to being help by said benefactor who was sent as a representative of a group of people who saw great potential in Freddy even in his current state.
To earn his loyalty they revealed to him the some of the secrets of the world with the understanding that this world that was hidden from the world his knew needed to be protected and that not all people would understand as that in fact magic and other such occult knowledge had become lost to many of the world and that there were those that would abuse such knowledge. They needed someone that they could believe in to help protect the known and hidden worlds from those that would bring harm to it.
Initially unsure and angry, Freddy eventually came around to this and began to train to be one of the people that they needed. Unknown to him the group that set him on this path were the Lords of Magic the same Lords of Magic that had consented to endowing others with their abilities, but previously they allowed it to be done by a wizard who some believed had become far too rigid in his ways by looking for someone that who was perfect in one way or another thus forgetting that humans by their very nature are as fallible as the Lord of Magic are.
To that end having seeing the dangers that presented themselves in the Wizard’s method they decided to intervene themselves thus the selection of Frederick Freeman who in spite of his disability and his loss worked to become the type of person needed to help protect the earth. Rather than be bestowed directly and the moment he agreed Freddy had to continue a normal life while training for whatever tasks would come his way.
Freddy had no real knowledge of what part he would play only that he would be called upon and he was. At first there were minor things but eventually the tasks became more difficult as they tested not only his capacity to complete physical tasks, but mental ones. They sought ways to test his compassion and reasoning slowly preparing him for the trials, each designed by each of the Lords of Magic, Solomon, Hercules, Apollo, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury. It was during the last trial Zeus trial that he earned the mantle of Shazam and became their champion learning that in all things he must trust himself and that everyone has positive and negative traits and that their abilities brought not only the positive, but the negative, but it all laid with him and that he had proven himself capable.
With this Freddy spoke the name he earned thus transforming him into the champion, but at the same time he revealed himself to the wizard who was not pleased with these turn of his events. It was his choice not theirs. He was to pick the champion not the Lords of Magic they interfered without even consulting him. Freddy stole nothing that the wizard offered to others, but he was not the wizard’s choice. Incensed, the wizard labeled Freddy the power thief and one not to be trusted as he was neither mentored nor chosen by the wizard and could not be reined.
He was unknown element in a delicate world that was doomed to do more harm than good in any sense of the word in the wizards eyes.
