Having a dad that is a world class journalist was kind of handy most of the time. If she got stuck on investigating an article he always knew how to point her in the right direction. Well, that was if they currently weren’t going through a period of ignoring or not talking to each other. She’d been a great kid growing up but once she’d hit her teens, she and her dad had started butting heads and they rarely stopped. She was pretty sure they were talking at the moment.
She’d spent the past three months doing research for a guy that she’d met in college and become friends with. Arthur Curry, or AC as everyone tended to call him was a Marine Biology student and had quickly stepped up to ‘best’ friend status with Dylan. He usually irritated her by being too smart for his own good when it came to her antics but he was quick enough on his feet that he usually ducked whatever object was incoming for his head. Still, he was someone she cared enough that she wanted to try to track down who his real parents were. He was an orphan and had been since birth, or that’s what his foster parents had told him. Everyone had a history though, it was just a matter of finding it and his had been particularly difficult to find.
Walking through the Daily Planet she stopped to talk to a few people that asked how she was doing and how her brother was. Since she’d been old enough to remember she and her brother had run amuck through the Planet’s bull pen. The place was a second home really and it gave her the chance to sneak into her dad’s office to use his computer while he was off doing something else. Sure she had access to the computers back at the school paper which she worked for but her dad’s computer had access to a few more data bases. Plus she needed to return his press pass that had conveniently fallen into her purse the last time she’d been over.
Dropping down into the chair behind his desk she slid the press pass back in the top drawer where he kept it and input his password into the computer. Not like his passwords ever stopped her, Ty taught her well in the world of computers thankfully.

It had been twenty years since the last time he had worn the Shield of Superman. Since that day that Lex Luthor had set off a Blue Kryptonite Bomb in the upper atmosphere and robbed him anyone like him with Kryptonian DNA the use of there abilities. Luthor had one that day, but he had not broken Clark's spirit not in the slightest. He may not be Superman anymore, but he was still Clark Kent and the power of the pen was still mightier at times then the sword. It was true he missed being able to do as he had done before saving people and protecting the world he loved. Those day were long gone, Bruce was dead, So was Oliver, Wally and so many other countless friends and comrades. Evil had one and pushed the world into a long night where there didn't seem to be much hope left. He missed them all and missed making a difference, but he couldn't do anything. The Watchtower was out of reach as was the Fortress. He could only do what he could now and that was be a reporter and a father to his two children.
His apperence had changed over the last twenty years, he still wore the glasses but he had grown a beard. He remembered Sam saying she liked him with one so even after her death he had kept it growing it. Raising to children had been a challenge to say the least, still he had done for them like his parents had done for him. He taught them right and wrong and showed them that even with there mothers abilities still present inside them that they still had a responsiblity to use those powers for good. No matter what the temptation was to use them for there own personal needs. His son Tyler had taken after him in a lot of ways. He was a good natured boy that did try to blend in but got into trouble now and again. His daughter Dylan took more after her mother. She was just as beautiful as she was and she had that same stuborn fire that Sam always had. It was why the did but heads once she got older and started to want to do things her own way. There was nothing that would ever stop him from loving her, but they did have there fights and it was easier at times for them both to ignore one another then to break windows with there shouting matches.
He had known she took his press badge when he was heading out on a story and found it missing from his Desk. He had taken to keeping a spare with him as much as possible mostly because of her stealing his. That was another point of argument between them. Her using his credentials and resources for what ever she was working o and never really asking him or telling him. He walked into his office and saw her typing away at his key board. He shook his head and closed the door behind him.
"You know the next time you want to use my computer for something it would be better to come in pretending like you came to see your dear old dad for a normal visit and not sneak up here while I am in a meeting" he looked to her as he put the files down on his desk
~~
If there was one thing that she’d learned from Aunt Lois was that sometimes a reporter had to do what a reporter had to do to get a story. Even with all the good morals that Clark had done his best to instill in his daughter she still had a rebellious streak that pushed her into doing the not so perfect things sometimes when she was tracking down information. She was good at what she did though. She’d already won a number of awards in college for articles that she’d written. When she graduated she’d have her pick of news papers to work for. She already have a few in mind, one of which in Washington to work against the still and current President, Lex Luther. The man had managed to wiggle his way into Congress and Americas heart till they over turned the two term rule and he was working on his fifth term now. People were so blind. Though she did have Superman for a dad to keep her from being such herself.
She smelled his aftershave about two steps before he got to his door and closed it with a little more umf than usual. She looked up, giving him one of her cute smiles, trying to make herself so sweet and innocent, which they both knew she wasn’t.
“I was just waiting for you. I brought you a Danish from that bakery you like down the street even! Besides, you’d get mad at me if I busted in on one of your meetings just to say high and claim it was for ulterior motives. We know this song and dance well enough. But maybe you can help me?” She gave him a hopeful smile. “I’m stuck on this project I’m working on. I’m trying to track down some adoption information but I’m getting brick walled. Alright, more like staring out over nothing is a better analogy. I swear it’s like this guy popped up out of a pod somewhere. And that was a bad pun to use with you, sorry.”
~~
"While I am thrilled to see you Dylan, usually coming to my office means you are looking to use my database for something. And if it is to make a story against Luthor I am going to stop you right now" He knew his daughters ambition to take on the President. He didn't like Luthor either and had gone toe to toe with him a few times in stories in the paper. He also knew you had to pick your battles and his daughter had a way of jumping in trying to take him down. He knew part of it was to get one for her dad because of what he had done. He did not want Lex looking anywhere near his children. Looking at him made it simple, it was already legendary the battles between the President and the Editor of the Daily Planet. Lex had tried many times to get him fired or discredit him but he was still there and still going strong. Now he had to worry what his daughter was going to do when she got her own job out there to go after him.
He smiled at her as he took the danish and took a bite while she told him about trying to find information about her friend. He chuckled at her a little when she mentioned coming out of a pod. He doubted the kid had anything about that still going on. "Well if it is something like that I am more then happy to help you out. Have you tried going into the adoption records. If they are not sealed you may find who put him up for adoption all those years ago" He pulled a chair up next to her to see what she was working on. he didn't mind helping his daughter when she was doing something like this. He loved his daughter and always wanted to support her on things she wanted to do with her life or her reporting He knew it couldn't be easy trying to make your mark when your father was Clark Kent.
~~
“Yeah well, you have access to more stuff than the database at school and Tyler bitched me out the last time I asked him to hack your computer from home. And no, it’s not about Luthor. The paper is refusing to print anything about the president that I write. Something about the Dean being friends with him or something. Bunch of kiss asses if you ask me.” She grumbled as she poked at the keys on his computer.
She hated being told what she could and couldn’t write about but that kicked back to her mother’s side of the family. She was just as hard headed though she was pretty sure some of her dad’s old friends would call him equally as hard headed sometimes.
“Yeah, I started with the adoption records figuring with your clout I could find some things out that someone off the streets couldn’t but it’s weird. There’s no adoption records at all for the Curry family. So I looked to see if maybe his mom married his dad after and changed her name but nothing under her maiden name either. It’s like one morning they woke up and took a kid in.” Gee, sound familiar? That hadn’t been over looked either. “Of course the Curry’s won’t talk about it either. I know this isn’t important to AC but the more I look into it, the more I want to know about it. There’s literally nothing on where this guy came from.”
~~
When she talked about how he was just plucked out of nowhere and brought to the Currys thad did raise his own suspicions of things. "Well if you can't find things on one path try another. You have to look at the possibility that the Curry's may not have gotten AC by legal means" He looked to her. "Look down that path see there financials See if anything from the time he was adopted to now would bring up anything out of the ordinary. You sometimes have to look at things from a different point of view to maybe find the truth of it." He smiled at her a little and touched her head "I know it may be hard but sometimes when people do something like this it is not always on the straight and narrow. Also look into AC as well. Check his blood type ad see if there is anything strange in it. He may very well be a Meta human or something similar.
There was enough strangeness in the world that even that may lead to figure out who his parents were. It could also be the case that maybe he was just left on the Curry's doorstep because of who his parents were, but if anything else it would help his daughter figure out what she was trying to find out.
~~
“Did that! Come on dad, I wasn’t born yesterday.” She grinned at him as pulled a jump drive out of her bag and plugged it into his computer pulling up the files on the Curry’s financials… okay so maybe she hadn’t gotten them legally but having a hacker genius brother did come in handy. “Their income didn’t change a year prior to when they got him to a year after so they didn’t pay anything out for a kid or any kinds of pay offs to people for fake papers unless they did it with cash though that bears the question of why they had that much cash on hand if they did.”
She changed the files on the screen to pull up another set of financials. “I didn’t even think about this until last week. I looked up his school file to see how his tuition is paid for because I know his scholarships don’t cover everything and the Curry’s wouldn’t have enough to pay for it. I thought maybe he had some mysterious benefactor that would blow the whole thing open. Not exactly the case but I did find that a trust fund was opened the same year that the Curry’s adopted him, in his name. The money came from a company called Atlantis Global. I just looked them up on your computer. The company opened for three days to start the account, then closed a few days later. No information on who started it or anything. It’s another ghost.”
She frowned a little, looking over at him. “How can I get a blood sample without him knowing? I’ve kind of been keeping this a secret. I wanted to be able to tell him who his parents were and his real birthday for his birthday this year. I don’t really want him knowing that I’m digging into his past like this.”
~~
"Well if his parents are clean then you have to look deeper into the trust fund. No matter how much a company appears then vanishes a few days later there is always some kind of trail of incorporation or anything to make it legitimate. Try digging deeper into that and you may find more. As for blood, I am sure at some point in his life he had to take a physical or been in the hospital. Check his medical records going back as far as you can. If there was anything strange in his blood there will be a note of it in his records. And if the parents are trying to hide something then it may be something big for him. And if you can't get a blood sample. Grab a strand of his hair and have it tested there to see if anything is a miss."
She was good, but she still needed to learn that you may be looking at someone from one point of view but you sometimes had to look at different angles to find the truth of things. AC may be a regular guy, but there may be more to him the meets the eye. Even when he was superman it took a lot for him to just be Clark Kent and keep the two apart. There were a number of people out there who could use a computer and start putting a few things together if they really wanted to look hard. "I know you can do it sweetheart" He smiled at her
~~
“Yeah but medical records are such a pain to get into these days since that whole privacy thing passed like twenty years ago.” She made a face. “Can’t I just stab him or something. He wont mind… to much.” She cut her eyes over to look at her dad with a little grin. “I could probably get some hair, I’m over at his place often enough.”
That much was true at least. She and AC where almost always together when they weren’t doing anything. He’d been to dinner with the family more than a few times though there wasn’t anything romantic going on between them. Really, she’d confided in Clark before that she figured he was gay considering how uninterested in girls he was all the time.
“Alright, I’ll do some more digging into where this company came from and see where that goes.” She giggled to herself, pulling the jump drive out and stuffing it back in her bag. “I love a good twist in a story.” Then she paused slightly. “Wow, I think this is the first time we’ve had a conversation lately were we haven’t fought.”
~~
"We don't alway have to fight about things sweety" He moved and kissed the top of her head as he got up to put some of the files into his cabinet. "But next time you take my press pass ask alright" He looked over her giving her that knowing look that he knew she had been in his office and taken his badge from inside his desk again. He admired her drive and knew she was going to be a great reporter, but he still didn't like her coming into his office and doing things without even talking to him about it.
SHe had to much of her mother inside her, always wanting to go against anything and get her way. It was something that he loved about Sam, but now he found it even harder to control it in his daughter. She was her own woman now and not his little girl anymore. Part of him was happy that she was so strong, but another part missed his little girl that always clung to him when she was worried or scared about something.
~~
“No but we always seem too. Did you fight with mom this much?” She smiled up at him when he kissed the top of her head, maybe a ghost of his little girl showing through. Till he pointed out that he knew that she’d taken his press pass. Ooooop! “If I’d asked you if I could take it you would have asked why and I don’t always want to tell you why when I’m researching articles that you don’t like me writing.”
Usually the things he didn’t like her writing were the things that got her too much noticed. She had no problems, even as a college student reporter going after stories that most veterans wouldn’t have touched. Like digging into things about Lex Luthor’s past against her father’s will.
“Don’t worry daddy, I’m a big strong girl, I know how to take care of myself when I get into trouble so you don’t have to worry. Most girls my age can’t bench press a volkswagon so I think I’ve got a one up on the bad guys.” She teased, straightening his tie before shouldering her bag.
~~
"Your mother and I did fight now and again thing, but never let it get to serious if we could help it." He smiled remebering Sam and still missing her after all this time. "And even then when it did get bad usually she would crawl into bed with me and wrap her arms around me and I knew it was going to be alright after that." He smiled at his daughter as she got up and moved to get her things. She was so much like her mother when he looked at her each day.
"Yes I would because you like going after things that I tell you to leave be. I know you can take care of your self, but I still worry. Especially since you have seemed to make Luthor the prime focus of your stories. I don't want you getting on that man's radar. He has been content that Superman is no more and not interested in other Meta Humans. I would like to keep it that way." Mostly for her and her brothers sake and the rest of the children still out there.
He knew in the end it was pointless to argue with her, she was going to do what she felt she should do to help people she cared about. "Just be careful alright" He looked at her and cupped her cheek gently just not wanting anything bad to happen to her by the evil that was still out in the world.
~~
“I wish I could remember her better. Everyone says I look just like her.” She smiled and leaned up, giving him a kiss on the cheek. “I guess I have to settle with looking in the mirror though.”
She rolled her eyes a little. “Well someone needs to expose him for all the things he’s done in the past. I don’t care if he has made it look like what ever things he might have done he’s changed. A zebra is still a zebra even if it pains itself in spots. He hasn’t changed, he’s just learned to hide whatever he’s doing better. I doubt he’s forgotten the meta humans. Most of them are just smart enough to keep their heads down or have just joined in with the crime rings.”
She smiled up at him though, reaching up to take his hand that had cupped her cheek. “I always am. I always make sure someone knows where I am when I’m doing something dangerous just like you told me. I pay attention when you talk dad, even when it seems like I don’t.”
~~
"I have fought Luthor for years sweety trust me I know how frustrating it can be to see him doing everything he is doing. But sadly it is a different world now and men like him prosper, but there is hope and I am sure one day Lex Luthor will be brought to justice for everything he has done." He smiled at her a little and gave her a hug. "I know it is hard for you not to remember her, but we do have a lot of pictures of videos of the family He knew it was not the same, but he did hoped it help with her memories of how her mother was and what she did for her babies.
"I know you do, but I am a father and it is my job to worry about you and your brother. Its just happen, even when you old and grey I will still worry. Just like you will worry when ever you have kids of your own." He smiled at her "Now I am not going to keep yo from getting the story you want so just becareful and I am here if you ever need anything."
