There was a yellow flash of light in the alley way between two buildings after a moment Kent walked out as the light faded. He was going to have to be careful with his charge more so then the others mostly because of the fact that she was of a child of Bast. He was not worried about that to much since he had already casted a spell that would mask who he was. He didn't know how far along in her skill she was and if she could sense who he really was. She was part of the others that were going to be needed to save the world and he had to make sure she was in her proper place when the time was right.
He walked into the archeology building and headed right to where he knew she was working on the artifacts they had just brought back from Egypt. He moved into the room quietly and just watched her. He was glad for a moment that they were alone and there wouldn't be that many questions about why hew as down there from others.
~~
Bennu, more commonly called Ben or Benny by her friends was nearly the perfect mix of her parents. She had her mother’s black hair and amber gold eyes, her father’s face shape and smatter of freckles across her nose and cheeks from constantly being in the sun. Unfortunately for her she’d also inherited her mother’s English teeth but the positive side was the body of an Egyptian goddess. She was tall, nearly six feet with a long slender body, legs and arms. She moved with a feline grace that he could only expect c considering her mother was an avatar of the goddess she followed. Granted she could also pick up a mace three times normal size and crack it into someone’s skull but that was neither there nor there.
She breathed magic around her, it gave her an alluring air that was completely natural. She didn’t do it on purpose it was just constantly around her. Magic for her was like breathing for other people, it was just always there, waiting at her finger tips for some kind of nudge in the right direction. Her prime focus of her magical studies though was spirit magic which shouldn’t be surprising considering her deity.
She seemed completely contained in her work, gently cleaning away debris from the mummy of a cat that they’d found on their recent dig to Egypt. She was the only one in the lab that late into the evening but she was used to working late. She was heading into her second to last semester of school, she lived at the place anymore. It took her all of about ten seconds of him standing there for her to lift her head and a shiver run down her spine.
Her head turned to the side and sharp golden eyes gave him a pointed look. “Can I help you?” Who was he? Why did she feel… that around him.
~~
"Well yes I came to see you see you Benny" He looked at her and smiled " My name is Kent Nelson and I was interested in the artifacts you brought back from Egypt" He knew on sight most of the objects in this room. The Knowledge that came with being Doctor Fate was like a whirl wind in your mind that could drive someone mad if they didn't know how to control it. He used it to understand all the objects he saw there. Mostly he was looking for anything that could be dangerous now that it was free to the outside world like this.
He turned back to her and smiled. " I am bit of a Historian when i am not writing and these objects you brought back always fascinate me". He could feel the power inside her as he got closer to her. She did have the raw power and he knew with enough training she could be a real force to be reconded with.
~~
She arched a sculpted brow as he walked further into the room and set her tools down on the table. Reaching up she pulled the small magnifying glasses off the end of her nose and hooked them on the pocket of the lab coat she had on over her normal clothes. The look on her face was not please.
“I’m sorry Mr. Nelson, these aren’t for sale to private collectors. They’re all going to Gotham Museum when we’re finished with them here.” Her words were polite but the tone of her voice was far from it. She had Carter’s grating personality no doubt. She’d been born early enough that she’d spent the first five years of her life with him and strangely still remembered it vividly. Somehow she figured she had her mother to thank for that.
She could feel some kind of power in him, masked but there, faint and hidden under all the layers of who he was. It crawled against her skin, made her own power flare up and show in her eyes as she glowered at him.
~~
"No looking to buy" He smiled at her "Besides most of these things I have already seen or know about them already and there are many copies I am sorry to say, though with how they were back in the old kingdom it is not surpising that many of them just used the same type of art work from time to time" He looked back and her and could sense her power flareing up. She did sense him, but she didn't know what she was dealing with thankfully or she may have either run or attacked him if she knew his true power.
He could see it in her eyes. She had her mothers eyes, but the way she was looking at him reminded him of Carter back then. Poor women was going to be a handful for any one around her, but that kind of attitude would server her well. If she could control her temper, he hoped that she didn't get all that from Carter, last thing the world needed was two have tempers like that in the world these days.
"Besides you are more important they these artifacts. Tell me how much control do you have over you power?" He knew it may shock her that he knew about her magic, but time was short and he did not have the time to play the normal games he could play being the Lord of Magic
~~
She was starting to go behind being irritated and right on into angry the more he yapped his jaw. Her hands balled into fists, moving to rest on her slender hips as they tilted to the side with a cocky stance. “You know what, you can get the hell out of here. You don’t even belong back here, these are private rooms for professors and student assistants.”
Stupid rich men thinking they could just mouth their way into anything. Never mind the fact that he just made her feel uneasy at the moment. She wasn’t used to that but she wasn’t going to back down either, if anything she just put herself between him and the artifacts after closing the lid on the mummy she’d been working on.
When he said she was more important than the artifacts she bristled and the rise of power that she’d been putting out in an attempt to make him uneasy stopped and suddenly sucked back in tightly to her body and she started throwing up barriers of her own, both mental and physical though neither were visible to the naked eye.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” She still eyed him carefully. Like hell she was going to start giving random information out to a stranger.
~~
"Lying is not the best thing either Benny. Hiding it is a good idea even in this world, but you already sense what I am and I can sense what you are. So lets drop the pretense right now. Your Bennu Hall, daughter of Carter Hall, also know as Hawkman. Your mother is a Avatar for the Goddess Bast and while you haven't gotten the full powers of a Avatar you do have the magical side of things which means you have great power, but I am guessing not much training in how to use them to there full potential. Not surprising with the world we live in these days." He moved over to one of the tables looking at a tablet there and smiled a little when he read it and saw that it referenced the Sorcerer Nabu. "Well I didn't expect to find this in there" He smiled a moment before turning and looking to her.
"Tell me Benny during all your travels to Egypt did you ever hear the legend about the Sorcerer Nabu?" He knew if she had been to digs like this then she would have heard of the man who had come to the Pharaohs and been a great wise man and Sorcerer how he had come from the sky and kept the peace against the creatures of the underworld. That he walked with the Gods yet still was a man. Or at least partly a man.
All the while as he moved he kept his hands open to show her he was not going to harm her, but he was also watching her in case she decided to jump the gun and throw her power at him. He was going to have to stop it in order avoid destroying the items in the room.
~~
“My mother has been training me since I was three.” She snapped back with the edge of a growl behind her voice. Carter’s charming personality rubbed off on a five year old, or maybe it was just genetics. Either way it was easy to see her father shinning out in her glowering eyes. “Knowing who my parents are means you’ve just done your research. Knowing what my parents are just shows that you’re talented with all that mumbo jumbo you’ve got floating around you. “ The growl carried through her words, maybe more so now.
“Of course I do, any kid with an kind of abilities that study ancient Egyptian know about him. Me more so considering he was the court sorcerer for the Pharaoh Khufu who was the first incarnation of my father.”
While hot headed she was, she also wasn’t going to risk hurting the items in the room. Like her parents she had a great love of all things old and Egyptian. It was more than just her chosen profession, it was in her blood. Her mother’s body was half Egyptian after all.
~~
"No I did not do any research I know both your parents very well, your father most especially down through the years and he has rubbed off on you more then would be good, but I guess that can't really be helped. Look I enjoy these games, but I can already tell your getting angry and I know the professors down here would get upset if some wild magic went off and destroyed some of the objects in here. So shall we" He raised up his hand and snapped his fingers. His eyes glowed golden for a meant before the gold light came around both of them and the next moment they were on the roof of the building.
"Much better, I don't know about you but always love the night air just seems so perfect even in a City like Gotham" He smiled over at her. "Before you start shouting and screaming about who I am or what I am after I will get to the point. I am Doctor Fate, Now I know if your mother has taught you anything then you know what that name means to the world of magic and heroes." He knew her mother would have told her about the powerful uses of magic still left int he world, and she would know about the one that was the Lord of Magic.
As he looked at her he saw great potential in Benny more so then he had in a very long time. He thought maybe just maybe she could be the one that would take up the helmet next if he fell. With her and Nabu working together the world would be protected by the creatures of the darkness. Still the time for that choice was not here yet. and hopefully not for a long time
~~
“Don’t you start bad talking my daddy!” Fastest way to piss off Bennu, talk bad about her parents which from the nasty golden glow to her eyes proved it. She was and always had been a daddy’s girl. The fact that she’d been trying to find his spirit over the last ten years since she’d been able to harness the magic didn’t help either. She missed her father, she wanted to know his spirit was safe and waiting to be reborn again. It bothered her that even Bast said nothing to her mother about where it was.
She watched his hand raise and her eyes go large and he held up a hand of her own. “Don’t you da-“ And they were now standing on a roof. “That is amazingly rude you know.” Her skin prickled from head to toe and she shivered, shaking off the feeling. When he went on to explain who he was her mouth shut promptly. Cat got your tongue?
“If I say I was daddy little girl do I get away without a slap on the wrist?”
~~
He smiled at her "Relax Benny, I know your father enough to know that if your temper is anything like his it will come up more then it should." He looked to the sky a moment before looking back to her. "You have great potential, but I am afraid your mother can only teach you so much and there is still a great deal to learn. And your skills are going to be needed when the time comes. The world has been without Heroes for a very long time and that time is drawing to a end. The Rising is going to start soon and you are going to be apart of it. You and your father."
He knew it was wrong what he did tampering with the cycle, but he knew this world was going to need Hawkman and Hawigirl if the new generation was going to have a chance. After Carter had died he had used his powers and kicked them out of the ether and back into new bodies. He had avoided Bast since doing that knowing she would not be that happy that he had tread on to her domain, but to him there were other things to worry about then the wrath of the gods.
"Because of this rising you should get to know the people that are going to depend on you just like you will depend on them in the future. They are like you, the children of Heroes and they are starting to come into there own and take up the mantles left by their parents."
~~
“It’s not like there’s a big neon sign for some magic school just waiting for me to find it. Everyone went underground before I even came into my own.” Not that she could blame them. The world just kind of went to shit in a matter of few years. “I’ve learned everything that she can teach me and I teach myself in the mean time.” She eyed him critically. She kind of had an idea of what he was hinting at but she wasn’t about to leap to any conclusions. Plus asking for help wasn’t exactly something that was easy for her. She was just as stubborn as Carter.
“What do you mean the rise is coming soon?” And then she got quiet for a moment, giving him a very hard look. “My father?” She was quiet again and her natural tan complexion paled as that sank in. “When was he reborn? Who is he? Is he in Gotham? Does he know?” She took a step toward him with every question, eyes large.
Once she realized what she was doing she took a step back again, crossing her arms across her chest and looking down, gathering herself back up. “I don’t exactly have the equipment to be a Hawkman and my mom locked away dad’s old wings before I could get my hands on them.”
~~
"He was reborn twenty some odd years ago, him and Chy-era. Trust me it was not a easy thing for me to start the cycle again so soon, but I knew that they would be needed in this world so I took the risk and brought them back sooner then they should have been. And I wish I could tell you who he is, but you will learn that sometimes as a Mage you can't always give out all the answers at one time. People finding things out for themselves is more important then just giving someone a answer. Besides you will meet him soon enough"
He smiled at her. "Your mother doesn't have them any more. After she looked them up I took them to the Tower of Fate for safe keeping till the time was right. So they are safe as well as the rest of his and Chy-era's equipment." He could tell she would be a handful when he took her on but he couldn't let this talent go to waste or risk having something happen to her because she tried something she was not ready for.
"And it is not your path to be as your father and be a Hawk, you will use what you have in the coming days. Heroes will be coming back, they will rise from the ashes again to take a stand against the Long night that has held this world. And you will be apart of that, but until then you are my Apprentice. I am going to show you everything that there is in the world of magic, but a warning first. Once you walk down this path there is no turning back. You are going to see things and feel them like you never had before. The knowledge and power I give to you will not be easy, but it will give you great control of your powers then you ever have before." He watched her waiting to see if she would be up for the challenge
~~
She looked like she was caught somewhere between shock and being ill. So much so that she turned her back on him, walking over to the edge of the building and sitting down on the rim that ran around all of it. Talk about taking the wind out of someone’s sails.
All those years she’d been trying to find him and that was the reason why. He’d been born again, but even if that was the case she still should have been able to locate his spirit though if he’d been masking it that would have been why. Her face fell down into her hands as her elbows rested on her knees and she let out a deep breath.
“Why didn’t you go to my mother when you did that? She thought something happened to his spirit, she thought that it had broken and he was gone forever. She’s been connected to him since his first death. Bast charged her with making sure his spirit was kept safe between lives. Do you have any idea what you did to her.” Anger wasn’t exactly the word that described her voice, more like rage as she came up out of her seat stalking toward him with a few tears trailing down her cheeks. “And you took his wings from her?” If he didn’t stop her she slapped him, hard too. “Just because you’re the Lord of Magic, it doesn’t give you the right to take things that don’t belong to you. She would have kept them safe you asshole!”
She stalked back away from him before she took another swing, an emotional tornado going off in her slim line frame enough to make her tremble though he kind of returned the smack at least verbally when he said she was to be his apprentice. Turning on him again she gave him a incredulous look. “Are you serious? Really? Just tell me why I should even want to accept after what you did to my mother?”
~~
He saw the anger coming off her and as she tried to slap him her hand froze before it even came near him. He just kept watching her not letting her hit him again. She had power there, but not enough where she could physically hit him unless he allowed it. She didn't have the strength or skill yet to break through his power, but he knew she would eventually get there and then she would be a very powerful force for good, but she still had much to learn especially about being detached from a number of things for her own good.
"I do not answer to your Mother or any god or goddess." His voice was low but she would feel the power behind it as he spoke. "I have to do things that are not always what people like, I do them because they are needed and necessary for the greater good of this world. I am not a magician who preforms magic. I am the Lord of Order...the one that keeps the balance of this world. " She would feel the pressure of his magic start to get greater then she had ever felt before. It would be like a flood of power washing against her. She had angered him and now she was feeling what it truly be Doctor Fate.
"Everything I have ever done since the fall of heroes is to prepare for the days coming. You have no idea what I had to give up or endure, your mother understands this better then most and she would not question the reasons why I did what I did and neither should you." He had a burden on his shoulders that was never known by anyone he called a friend. It was his alone to bear and hers as well if she ever became like him.
"And the reason why you should accept is because you need to learn control for what is to come. If you want to live up to your fathers legacy then you are going to have to become more then you are now. And I can show you that, but if you wish to stay as you are, you will be a target and believe me there are others who will take your power and add it to their own and you will have no possible chance of stopping them. This is not a world of light right now Benny, sometimes hard choices have to be made so that hope has a chance to burn again."
~~
“It’s not a matter of <b>answering</b> to anyone! It’s a matter of kindness in a world that you’ve so pointed out is lost in the darkness. He was her husband for gods sake!” The low tone of his voice didn’t detour her nor did the force of magic that he pulled up around himself. She stood in the face of it, drawing out the well of her own powers around her to divert the flow of his. She couldn’t overpower him but she pushed it aside the best she could. It was at least somewhat impressive. “Don’t give me that for the greater good bullshit. That’s such a cop out. You could have told her.” Trying to hold back his power was making her shake from head to toe but she didn’t back down, she stood her ground, stubborn to the end.
“No, I don’t know what you’ve had to endure but a decent person wouldn’t what to put someone else through unneeded pain. Has anyone ever told you, you’re a concede jackass?” At least she didn’t pull her punches and speaking of punches. The force of his magic beat down on her to the point that she sank down to her knees, pulling her magic in tight to try to keep the crawl of his off her skin. She closed her eyes, fighting off the wave of nausea that rolled down from her head. “Head rush.” She mumbled.
~~
He felt her trying the different approach and he was impressed that she had learned that level of control to try that, but it wasn't enough. He was able to keep his defense ups and hold her at back. "You will find there is always a reason behind everything that is done Benny. The reason why I did not tell Mica about him being back is because I did not want her searching for him. He has to be in this time who he has to be and not have influence of who he was till he was ready for it. If you or Mica had know he was reborn you would have tried to find him and that could be disastrous. It would confuse who he is, because you and your mother would want him to be Carter Hall, but he can't be that man. Yes he will have his memories and be similar in many ways, but he has to be who he is in this time to make a difference not a shadow of who he was." He knew it would be hard for her and Mica but he had force Carter out earlier then he should have been. The cycle never really began again till the people he knew had passed beyond the veil. Now his former wife and child were still alive and it could have created a problem if he hadn't stopped them from looking for him or knowing about him.
"I am sorry I put you both through the thought of him being lost forever, but you will learn Benny that sometimes you have to do something that doesn't always make you or others around you feel good. You are a Mage and with that comes a greater responsibility to the Balance of things."
He calmed down and pulled his magic back to normal levels not to overwhelm her again. He reached out to help her to her feet. "You can be much more then you are now Benny and I can help you get there if you let me" He looked to her watching her on her knees.
~~
“Then you obviously don’t know my mother as well as you might think you do. She’s an avatar, they’re watchers. As much as she might have wanted to be closer to him, to watch how he grew but she would never try to make him into something he wasn’t. Carter Hall is dead, whoever he is, while he might have the memories of him, he won’t actually be him. Neither of us are dumbasses. You should try having more faith in people.” Not that it was an easy thing in this day and age but she wasn’t just anyone, even coming from the mouth and eyes of her daughter.
Normally flexing her abilities didn’t affect her like that had but it wasn’t exactly every day that she came up against someone that powerful either. At least he was one of the ‘good guys’ though she still wanted to smack him… okay, smash him upside the head with a mace but that was beside the point.
When he reached out to help her up she took his hand, standing up slowly and getting her feet back under her. “Give me the opportunity and I’ll be better you than some day.”
~~
"Maybe but that day is still a ways off, Apprentice" He smiled at her as he looked to her. He moved his hand up as there was a flash of Light and in his hand was a small golden Ankh. He held it out to her " Since I know you are going to be needed in this world and I don't want to take away from your studies or you soon to be friends, this will allow you to enter the Tower Of Fate. Be warned when you go there, to do not look beyond the room where you appear without me there with you. The Tower is hope not only objects like your Fathers wings, but things that could harm your or destroy your if you don't now how to deal with them. I will teach you all them, but for now to do not leave the room where you end up. All you have to do when you go there is Speak my name aloud and the Ankh will do the rest and transport you there.'
"Now that that is taken care of I think it is getting time for you to meet your friends. There is one boy that I know has been coming here sitting in on a few classes, his name is Bobby Queen." He opened his hand and a small fire appeared in the palm and showed her the face of Bobby. "I think he would be the best starting out point since he knows the others and he is going to be around this campus any way. Don't worry about trying to find him your paths will cross soon enough" He smiled at her a little.
"I will call you when it is time for you lessons, don't worry its not going to be a strange hours...all the time. I do have many things yet to do before the rising, but you will learn a great deal before then as well."
~~
“You know telling someone not to do something is a sure fire way to get them to do something. You seriously need to work on your people skills.” Not that she was one to talk but she took the ankh anyway, lifting a gold chain out of her shirt and unlatching it to string the ankh on it with a man’s wedding ring and a pendent of a cat. Latching it back around her neck she pulled her hair out and slid them all safely under her shirt again.
“I’ll keep an eye out for him. It’s not like I have time right now to go hunting people down.” Her surly disposition popped right back up even with the pounding ache in her head.
“I live strange hours, I’m a grad student.” She shrugged it off, rubbing the butt of her palm into one eye. “If you’re always going to be this irritating I’m buying stock in advil.”
~~
"You will get used to it" He smiled at her a little. "And learn to enjoy your life a little Benny. The coming days are going to be harder then you could possibly know. And I am not talking about your training. When everything starts its going to be had battle but they are going to need you and you them. But I have faith that you will be able to come out through it all' She was her fathers daughter, for that he knew she would be handful, but she would have his same dedication that Katar always did.
Apart of his wished he didn't have to do this, but she needed to be shown the way to help the others. There were so many threats to this world that were not limited to street level criminals. She would be there magic against the others who could use it. Still time was growing shorter each day and soon they would have to fight again.
He watched her eyes as he made a motion with his hand and that same flash of light as before and they were back in the room they had left before. "I will leave you to your studies of the artifacts" he smiled and nodded to her as he started to leave.
~~
He walked into the archeology building and headed right to where he knew she was working on the artifacts they had just brought back from Egypt. He moved into the room quietly and just watched her.
