Enter The Huntress 1
Batman is tailing local mob boss Salvatore Punchinello, slowly collecting evidence to see why rival mafia families (Punchinello and Vercetti) are now working with one another, rather than killing eachother. He tracks them to a warehouse where it seems some sort of deal is going down between the two mafia families. He comes across a costumed woman prowling the streets and following the mobster everywhere he goes. Batman watches her for a time before confronting her on the roof of a warehouse where a mafia deal is taking place. The woman identifies herself as "The Huntress" and Batman mistakes her for a deranged mafia hitman. After an initial period of mistrust the two tackle the warehouse deal together, shutting down their operation, batman, whom had planted a tracer on the vehicle of the escaping mobsters takes Huntress and tracks them down to their new location.
Little does Batman know that the woman behind the mask is Helena Bertinelli, a childhood friend (and then later in life, a lover for a brief period) whose parents had also been murdered at the hands of the Gotham mafia. His former friend had been shipped off to live with her legal guardian in Italy and Bruce had not seen nor spoken to her since, until travelling to Italy and meeting up once again. There they shared a brief but passionate relationship that ultimately ended when Bruce was forced to return to Gotham due to work obligations. Unbeknownst to Bruce Helena has used Salvatore's son Travis as a means to getting close to the mafia Don himself.
The trace leads them back to Punchinello manor where Huntress makes a distraction while Batman sneaks into the Don's office, searching for anything that might connect the Punchinello's to the Vercetti family. There within he found a cell phone with records of calls between the two bosses and a coded book with an address that was deep in Vercetti territory. Batman quickly deduces the two are attempting to form an alliance. Huntress and Batman part ways, however, he has given her a two way communicator and agree to meet again the following night to investigate the address.
Enter The Huntress 2
Huntress and Batman follow the address to a mob owned restaurant in little Italy and find a meeting between Salvatore Punchinello and Tommy Vercetti. They both listen in while Batman records the conversation.
They discover that Salvatore and Vercetti are discussing the murder of a former mafia boss, who just happened to be Helena's father. The mafia has rules stating that any man who contrives to kill a boss cannot himself move up to boss status, nor can said man's progeny. Salvatore and Tommy's father had committed that murder meaning neither Sal, nor Vercetti's son are legitimate leaders of their respective factions. Sal then alludes to the fact that his own son is engaged to the daughter of the murdered man and has become paranoid that she could uncover the truth ( a reporter has been digging into the cold case files and attempting to discover whom had done it) and turn him in, either to the police or his captains, who would quickly bury the old man and fight amongst themselves until a clear victor was established.
However, Salvatore cannot give the assassination job to any of his won men as murdering the fiance of his son would be highly irregular and suspicious, thusly he is attempting to outsource the job to Vercetti and his men, to make it look like a gangland execution from a rival faction. Both men have a vested interest and Tommy Vercetti agrees to take the contract.
Little does he know he was divulged his entire plot to the target of his wrath. And the goddamn Batman. Huntress vows to avenge the murders on behalf of the "girl" who was left, batman tries to dissuade her from taking that path but she rebuffs him and speeds back to her apartment.
Bruce, whom knows Helena Bertinelli now knows there is a contract out for her murder, however, he speeds towards Helena's private condo suite. He calls Helena from his phone explaining the situation and that he would be there shortly. He is too late.
Moments earlier the assassin Hush, paid and bought by the Vercetti family has shot a poison dart through the open window of Helena's apartment and into her neck. She has but mere moments to live.
Bruce rushes Helena back to Wayne Manor, having dealt with Hush once before he knows the poison well and its antidote. he calls Alfred and tells him to prepare it. Helena survives but is rendered weak for several days where she remains at Wayne Manor trying to sort through her feelings and try to figure out what to do about her situation.
Direct Intervention
During this period of recovery Bruce hear's that a family employed to Wayne industries has all but been wiped out, save for the youngest son, Richard Grayson. Feeling somehow responsible for their murders, Bruce tracks down the young man and offers to have him come stay at Wayne Manor as his ward, where he would be afforded opportunities he never would have had otherwise.
Dick, however, is wary from a lifetime of hardship and disappointment and rebuffs Bruce's offer, stating that he'd rather make his own way. Bruce grudgingly leaves the young man with a means of communication and a promise that if he needed him, he would try to help.
Enter The Huntress 3, finale
Bruce, having sussed out Huntress's identity without he knowledge finds the room he had given Helena empty and knows that she has gone to murder Punchinello. He races back to the Punchinello Mansion to stop her from going down a dark path he himself had traveled.
He gets there in time to see her atop a building across the street from the mansion. He tries to convince her to take the high road and to use the evidence they had recorded at the meeting at the restaurant but Helena will not budge, this has been her life's mission. Bruce then reveals his identity and tells her he knows who she is, or at least who he suspected she was. He calls Helena's cell phone and rings within the folds of Huntress's costume. He tells her that this will not fill the void in her life and that if she does this, he could not watch her do it, he could not be apart of it. He gives her the recording and then leaves her to her decision.
Helena sneaks into the mansion, into Salvatore's bedroom as he sleeps. She wakes him up and reveals herself to him and that she knows of his plot to kill her. Salvatore is visibly shaken but not without his guile. Her presence, however, had silently alerted Travis to an intrusion and he burst into his father's bedroom firing wildly. While distracted, Salvatore used the opportunity to retrieve his gun and shoot her, she was caught bewteen both men and had nowhere to go. Just as the gun exploded the window crashed in and Batman flew in with the shards, inbetween Helena and the bullet, simultaneously letting a batarang fly. The bullet, however, is an armor piercing round and it goes in through his shoulder and out the other side. Alive but bleeding, his batarang lodged deep in Salvatore's chest, Travis tells Helena to take "The Bat" and leave.
Helena tells Travis why and he exploded with anger and accuses her of lying, as she turns to leave with Batman he pulls his gun but Helena is too fast, her crossbow bolt takes him in the throat and kills him. Helena takes Batman to the only ally Batman has, a mysterious behind the scene private investigator who goes by the name Oracle. Helena takes him there and the two manage to just barely save his life.
Escaping with both their lives, the mafia believes Helena to be dead and the contract fulfilled. Salvatore ends up dying of his wounds and Travis had been killed instantly, the Punchinello family begins an internal civil war.
Wrap up
In the wake of the events the pair lay low and begin exploring a now rekindled relationship. Unfortunately Bruce realizes that Helena cannot stay in Gotham, she is too easily recognizable and if she were to be found out, another contract might be levied against her life. Helena leaves him and travels to Hub City.
Meanwhile, Alfred has deciphered the coded book batman had picked up Salvatore's office and it speaks of blood, satanic rituals and a cult of mystics known as the "Chosen of Trigon". Hand drawn maps detail cells of the cult across the country and it alludes to a fast approaching ceremony of bloodletting, where nine innocents must be sacrificed. This event is to take place in Gotham and would bring members of the cult from far and wide. Bruce vows to stop the ceremony....
MEANWHILE IN STAR CITY
The masked hero known as the Green Arrow has also come across evidence of this cult and has decided to make the trip to Gotham to investigate further.
