Having an nearly endless budget to create was awesome. Having to go to meetings weekly and sometimes daily on the other hand sucked. She hated the constant meetings on the status of different projects that were coming up on deadlines. As much as she wished she could have sent someone else to deal with those kinds of things she couldn’t. She was the department head which meant it all fell onto her. And all the orders for parts, items and everything else imaginable she felt like she never had time anymore to get her hands into the things that she loved.
Everyone else had left for the day and she’d been stuck in her office for the last two hours finishing up paperwork for the day she hadn’t had time to get too for meetings. Damien was in the same boat, they’d both told each other they wouldn’t be home till late. Most likely after they got home too he’d suit up to go out for the night and she’d end up in front of the computer helping him as usual. While he life was on the upswing with a great job and boyfriend, she missed the spontaneity of her life in Paris.
Pushing up from her desk she gave up for the night, gathering up her coat and purse. She didn’t make it far though, stuck in her doldrums and thinking of Paris. She walked into the lab, draping her things over the back of a stray chair as she walked through the cubical and work stations of the people under her. She trailed her fingers over tools and peered at prototypes. Memories of old school projects came to mind and made her miss even more about her old life. Was it enough to make her go back? No. But it was enough to make her want to change things in even a small way right now.
~~
As she kept on walking, Alexandre was busy at one of the desks looking over the paperwork of one of the prototype. The schematics, blue prints. It was a fascinating machine. If he was looking at it correctly, it would allow the police force to listen in on conversations without having to wiretap. The bug was about the size of a small coin and powerful enough to transmit the data up to 3 blocks away. There's a smile over his lips as he makes a couple notes.
Alexandre was brought in just today. It was his first day, infact. Damien Wayne had hired him to work with Cecilia. To more or less provide some backup if she needed it. While she may have not said anything about needing someone. That’s why Alexandre was here. To provide relief and to make the R&D Workspace more functional. To get things turned out ahead of time. Not that their projects were ever behind. But they'd been cutting closer and closer to the deadline…
Hearing footsteps, Alex would lift a brow swiveling the chair towards the woman. The office wasn't dark, there was plenty of natural light and office light from other buildings near them. He pauses, the color draining from his face. He didn't realize that she'd be working here. Pressing his feet to the ground, he pushes his long body up. Eyes looking over the pretty blonde with red painted lips. She always wore red really nicely.
"….Cece?"
~~
She heard the sound of a chair moving and she turned in a circle looking for who was still left in the lab. She’d thought everyone had gone home. Usually if someone was going to stay late they reported to her so she could let security know ahead of time. Had she missed a request from someone in her rush to get through the days paper work?
“Hello?”
Turning around again as she heard her nick name being said she looked confused. No one in the states called her that. Really only the people that had known her for years had ever called her Cece. Usually it was just Cee, or her full name. The feel of her stomach doing a flip as the voice triggered off old memories before she even saw her face caught her completely off guard.
Swollowing past the lump in her dry through she turned the rest of the way around to face Alex. Color washed out of her face, making her lips stand out all the brighter. Her suit was a pale gray but she’d put a blue shirt on under it that morning which added enough color to her without washing her out in the neutral tones. She looked the opposite of the girl that he’d known in Paris without her jeans, t-shirts, scarves and hats.
“Alex?” Was he really standing in front of her? Just seeing him again made her feel ill thinking about a day that seemed ages ago but really it had only been two years. She could still remember standing in front of the mirror at the church dressing room, making sure everything was in place when her maid of honor and his best man came in to tell her that Alex had left. Neither had known why, they said he’d just gotten up and walked out as the first guests had started to arrive. Nothing she’d ever experienced before then or after could equal the heartache and feeling of betrayal that she’d felt that day and it all rushed back seeing him again.
“What are you doing here?” Her voice came out in a strangled whisper.
~~
"What am I doing here?" asking as he gave a half smile trying to figure out exactly how to talk to her. It'd been over two years now. You think he'd gotten over it. But… it was still fresh. Pressing his lips together as he placed his hands together. "I… was hired by Damien to help out…" trailing off "He saw my resume." or what he claimed it was. In the last couple years things got a little … out of hand. "You look good." she always did. Always will. He was feeling a little weak in his knees as he moved to lean against the desk, trying to catch his breath.
Watching her, he wasns't sure how she was going to feel about this. How he was here, after two years. There's a hint of a smile pushing its way up as he pushed his hand through his hair. This was strange. to see her here of all places, the memories of her in the white dress were still vivid. She looked so … beautiful. It was so hard to walk away that day. To leave everything behind. To not look back… he knew he wrecked her.
But, now here she was. Standing infront of him.
Was he still inlove with her? A little bit. Mostly. Ok, a lot. There were times he would rub his finger where his wedding ring would have been. Thinking about the what ifs.
"Cece…" trailing off, giving something an apologetic smile.
~~
“Help out? With what?” Driving her insane? She was pretty sure she didn’t need any help with that. But did Damien even know about their past. No, he couldn’t have, he wouldn’t do this to her if he had known. Why hadn’t he told her he was trying to find her an assistant, or help, or whatever Alex was going to be doing here? A surprise maybe, more so than she was quite sure he intended.
“Th-thank you.” She stammered out, still trying to get ahold of herself and the situation and her stomach. And then of course he smiled at her and she felt weak in the knees, just like she always had. At least it wasn’t one of his megawatt ones as she’d called them. How the hell was she going to work with him?
Did she still love him? If the question had come up before this she would have said no. She was head over heels in love with Damien, no question about that. She’d almost married Alex though and she had loved him. The two men couldn’t have been any more different if they tried either. She hadn’t even thought about that till now. It made her suddenly wonder about a lot of things in terms of her relationships with both of them, mostly Damien.
“No, don’t look at me like that. I-“ She stopped and shook her head. “I don’t even want to know.” Which was a lie but she didn’t think she could handle it right now. Instead she turned and started to walk away toward the exit.
~~
Sighing as she turned starting towards the exit, he's quick on his feet as he reaches her in just a couple of steps. His long legs able to catch up to her quickly. His hand reaching out to catch his hand on her shoulder. Hoping she'd stop and turn around. Though, something was preparing him for a smack, he didn't know why. But he was fully expecting it. "Cece!" sighing as he "I'm sorry." telling her, his voice apologetic, if she sees him. She'd see his stance is very apologetic.
Shoulders sagging slightly, the color in his face was slowly coming back. Though, his heart was beating like a hammer. Almost like it was going to explode. Reaching his hand up from her shoulder to her cheek, he cups it slightly, enough to tilt her head up so she could look into his eyes. There's a long conversation between them. The silence and tension between them was thick enough to cut with a knife, it was such a strong feeling.
Alex was still very much in love with her. Very much attracted to her.
For just a moment, a brief moment. They weren't here in a corporate environment. They were elsewhere.. . somewhere that wasn't here. Slowly placing a foot infront of his, he pulls himself just a touch closer.
~~
She’d never been a violently physical person but he drove her to think about it as his hand slid over her shoulder and pulled her back. His touch was gentle and she could have pulled out of it, she could have kept going but she stopped and turned. Her hand was half raised before she could think about it, ready to slap him, wanting to hurt him so he might feel even some small ounce of the hurt she’d felt but really, physical pain couldn’t compare in the slightest.
“You’re sorry?” She hissed in a low whisper.
She started to go on as sharp words balanced on the tip of her tongue but they lost their edge as his hand touched her cheek. His fingers conformed to her skin and made her breath hitch and her eyes close. Her head leaned back at his urging and her eyes flickered open as his thumb brushed under one of her eyes.
It was funny how much could be said without a single word being spoke and Cece had never been one to hold back her thoughts from her eyes. Old feelings welled to the surface of her eyes and she couldn’t stop it. He’d walked out and left her without closure. Moving on had been difficult and she’d thrown herself into living a life for herself instead of for someone else which had left her in a string of relationships with lots of lust and passion but no real substance behind them. She’d expected nothing more than that with Damien, she hadn’t meant to fall in love with him, just like she didn’t mean to still love Alex. Was it even possible to love two people? Apparently it was and it wasn’t a feeling she liked either.
He stepped closer and some little voice of the young girl she’d been all dressed in white screamed at her to kiss him but another voice told her no and followed with the whisper of her name in a deeper voice. “No.” She whispered as he started to lean in.
“No.” She said again stronger and reached up, grasping his wrist to pull his hand away from her face and step back from him again. “I have a boyfriend.”
~~
"That didn't stop us the first time." he says quietly, stepping after her. When she pulls his hand away from her cheek, he lets her. But then lets it fall down to her waist. There was nothing more he really could say. His breathing is light. His pulse racing before he smiles pulling his hand back as he looks down between them. "But, I will leave that up to you." saying as he leaned in towards her lips at first, letting them hover over them for a moment before lightly brushing past them to kiss at the corner of her mouth.
"I will see you later, Cece…" trailing off with a smile, his voice barley above a heated whisper. Fingers reaching up to push a strand of blonde hair behind her ear. Taking a deep breath. He steps back slowly turning to walk away. "You should wear your hair down more often. Makes you look much sexier." giving her a bright smile over his shoulder at her as he walked back towards the desk to grab his jacket. It was the same jacket he had all those years ago.
The same jacket she used to wear, the same one they first shared an illicit kiss. He remembered it, they were at a park. Her boyfriend at the time never showed up, she was getting cold. So, he offered his jacket to her, then they kissed a few minutes later. As much as he would love to do that just now. He was going to have to work her again…
Maybe this will all be worth it?
