It’d only been a few days since she’d last seen Damien, but things had happened in that short amount of time. And she owed it to him to let him know. They were, after all, partners. Even if she was going to need to take a short “vacation” from it. She tugged the belt of her jacket a little tighter, even though it wasn’t that cold. She wasn’t showing yet, but she was still self-conscious about it. She’d sent out a letter through the DA’s office about formally “quitting” her internship. She hadn’t really returned to it, even after Tibet, so it wasn’t like she wasn’t really on the books. She just hoped things wouldn’t go too badly for Ramsey when everyone found out. She swallowed and shook her head. It didn’t matter. The office was going into election in the next year. And Damien already said he’d back Ramsey for the campaign. It would be fine. It had to be fine, really.
“Is Mr. Wayne in?” The woman, older than Jennifer by at least a decade, sat at a large, clean desk in front of his office. She’d never been to visit him at Wayne Tower before and it made her nervous, like she wasn’t dressed properly enough, wasn’t old enough to really be there. She wasn’t even 21 yet, though her birthday was in less than a week.
“Do you have an appointment?” The woman didn’t even glance up, her eyes fixed resolutely on the screen. Damien wasn’t the type to have a slew of women in and out of his life, so it wasn’t like she was risking a stereotype.
“No. But he knows me. Jennifer Levinson. I’ll wait.”
She shoved her hands into the coat pockets. She couldn’t remember the last time she wore stockings, but she did with her heels and skirt. Though, under the coat she wore a tee-shirt that was wrinkled and probably needed to be laundered.
The woman sighed, but picked up the phone to connect to the interior of the office.
“Mr. Wayne? There’s a miss Levinson to see you. She doesn’t have an appointment.” The woman glared at Jenn as if showing up unannounced was the worst thing in the world. Maybe it was.
-----
"Have her come in." Damien would respond to his secretary. She was his mothers Secretary and was his father's for just a couple years. Least to say, she knew her stuff and kept things going on. When Jennifer steps into the office, she'd see it was large and rather decked out. But it looked older than a lot of the other offices. Everything was solid wood, the bookcases. His desk, even down to the visitors chairs would be made from solid wood.
Things were changing fast, it was hard to keep up sometimes. But he was, and with the help from a solid base, he was able to do both his jobs. "Hello Jennifer." saying as he stood up to greet her with a hug and kiss on her cheek. They'd been through a lot. Especially within the last year. Damien considered her a close friend, someone he could confide in. "Please, have a seat." gesturing to one of the seats. The view from his office was stunning, to say the least. The view was of Gotham's downtown with the water in the background showcasing part of Gotham's skyline.
"How are you?" asking as he walked over to a small fridge and pulled out pair of water bottles. "I do not think you have ever been here. If you wish, I can give you a tour of Wayne Tower." a nod with another smile as he approached and offered one of the bottles to her.
-----
She smiled at the secretary before she slid into the doors that hid his office from the rest of the world. He’d told her about it, while they were traveling. How he’d spend time there as a child with his mother. She’d never come to Wayne Tower before. She didn’t think it was her place. Even when they returned. Things just happened...too fast. And he didn’t spend as much time there as he should’ve been. One of the things that Lily had been right about.
“Thanks,” she said, kissing his cheeks back. He was picking up more and more of the French custom as he stayed with Cece. “I’d rather stand. Ants in my pants and all that.”
She watched as he moved. He was more confident, self-assured, than he had been when she first met him. And even when they returned. She hadn’t noticed the change happening, just that it did. Maybe it was because she’d never actually been to Wayne Enterprises before, too.
“Is it safe to talk here?” She raised a brow, letting him know what she meant. “I need to talk to you...about business.” She took one of the bottles, but didn’t open it.
When he nodded that she could talk, she sighed and bit her lip. “I need to tell you something, Damien. Two things, really. And I don’t want you to freak out on me.”
She waited, the span of two heartbeats. “Ramsey and I...Well. I’m pregnant. I found out after you left this weekend. And when I told Ramsey...he proposed. We’re going to get married.” She said it in a rush, but found she couldn’t look at him when she did say it. Instead, she kept her eyes focused on his chest, or over his shoulder. Anywhere but his face.
------
Damien is silent for a moment, eyes watching hers. Unsure why she's looking away from him. Putting the bottle down, he steps up to her. His hand moving to lift her chin. "I'm happy for you, Jennifer." giving her a smile "But, are you happy about it?" asking, curious. He wasn't sure, her body language wasn't really screaming that she was excited. Was this what she wanted? "All I want is for you to be happy.
Shouldn't she be ecstatic? To become a mother and to marry the love of her life? One usually is. Though, he didn't know anybody personally who would be. But if it happened to Damien, he knew he'd be excited to bring a life into this world with the woman he loved. "You can tell me anything, Jennifer. I want you to be able to tell me anything." a nod as he took a deep breath. Eyes looking down into hers. She was an incredibly capable woman.
Maybe the look away gaze wasn't meant to say she wasn't happy. But to say… she was afraid of his reaction? Why would he be mad? Yes, he understood that she probably wouldn't be able to go out on patrol with him anymore. "I hope you do not think I would be disappointed, or unhappy about this." saying, as he bit his lip. Because he didn't want to seem that way to her.
----
She offered a small smile when he looked at her. She honestly didn’t know why she’d been nervous about it. “I am. Happy, I mean. Estatic, really. I just-- You’re the first person I’ve told. I don’t think he’s even called his mother. It’s just...” She sighed and moved away, collapsing onto the couch against the wall. “I’m worried about you, actually.”
She lifted her gaze and stared at him for a minute. “I can’t be in costume. For a while, anyway. And, you need help, Damien. You’re better than you were, but you’re still not -- Ramsey and I ran into some ‘roided up Jokers a while back. That’s where I cracked my ribs. You can’t fight them alone. And you keep pushing Lily away. You need her, Damien. Whether you want to admit it or not, you do. I’d feel better if I knew she was out there with you.”
She bit down on her lip. That was why she’d been nervous. She’d been confident when she’d talked to Lily, but now...she didn’t know. She loved him, in some way, and knew she needed his approval. She’d wanted to make a difference, and he hadn’t pushed her away when he found her battling those gangsters all those months ago. He’d welcomed her to “the family,” as it were. And now she felt like she was walking away.
“Ramsey’s thinking about running for DA next term. And if he won...Well, if he did and you had Wayne back to what it was when your dad was alive...we could change the city, Damien. Without the costumes. I wouldn’t worry about the baby going out at night. Things need to change, but maybe not just when it’s dark and scary.”
----
"With Ramsey as DA. Things will change, it's a step in the right direction. Once he is, I'm going to push for an initiative to re-equip the Gotham City Police Department with modern armor and tools in order to help the city. Then start on a building campaign to start fixing the city up. Root out corruption within the Police Department, within the city government. And with Ramsey's help. It will all be possible. Once Gotham is safe, then I will stop going out." a nod as he took a deep breath. "As for Lily…" trailing off, he wasn't quite sure where he stood with her.
Crossing his arms, he thought about it for a moment, his fingers stroking his chin. "I know I need to speak with her." glancing to Jennifer, he smiled though. "And I know you won't be able to go out for a long while. And when you have your child. I do not want you on the streets. A child needs their mother, their father." another nod as he gives another smile. "I… will speak with Lily."
Placing his hands on her shoulders.
"I'm so very proud of you, Jennifer. I want you to know this. And I cannot be happier than I am." Letting her go for a moment, he'd walk over to his desk, pull out a check book and then walk back to her. "I do not want you or Ramsey to worry about medical bills, or anything. I will cover all expenses, Give you the best doctors money can buy." opening the check book, he'd scribble her name and then sign it. Leaving the amount blank.
"Speak with Dr. Balk, he is our family doctor. I am sure he will refer you to the best OB/GYN in the city."
-----
She smiled and wrapped her arms around him, embracing him tightly. She felt better, her heart lighter, after the talk. She knew it would be like that, too. She was glad he was in her life. There were times she might want to strangle him, but he meant well.
“Thanks, Damien.”
She took the paper from him, slipping it into the pocket of her coat. She’d call him when she got home.
“I’ll have to take a raincheck on the tour. I need to go grocery shopping. But tell Cece I said hello, would you? And I’ll call her about plans for next week. For my birthday.” She grinned before she squeezed his hand and told him she’d see herself out.
“Is Mr. Wayne in?” The woman, older than Jennifer by at least a decade, sat at a large, clean desk in front of his office. She’d never been to visit him at Wayne Tower before and it made her nervous, like she wasn’t dressed properly enough, wasn’t old enough to really be there.
