Synopsis: Tim meets with Maya Evans from Infinity Group who shares with him the type of work that he would be doing with the company. She shared with him the benefits of working with the Infinity Group would be. Tim skeptical because of his shady background was assured that the company was on the level which lead to the disclosure of the project that they had in mind for him would be with S.T.A.R. Labs. Sensing Tim's lingering doubts Maya advised him to think on it while being offered a standing room at the Halldorf that the company has.
TIM: So. Today was the day he was meeting this person from Infinity Group. Whoever they were, they were big. And to reach out to him? Well, it was throwing all kinds of red flags. Before he came, he'd let his "friend" Oracle know what was going on. They may be on opposite sides of the spectrum, but he had his own reasons. Tim had chosen a restaurant off of fifth. It was an older joint and he had a good word in on the owner after some Cyber Dweebs trashed his site and online ordering system. Least to say, He fixed it all and in kind, the owner paid him with food.
The place wasn't busy, but there were people around and that's what he wanted. Someplace public, but private. It was a weird time in his life, so he thought. He had hacked into the school and made himself a student while leaving some random address as his home address. Tim would figure that part out later, for now. He needed to get his act together and stop living in warehouses and abandoned homes. He made a promise…
Sipping on his ice water, his eyes would continue scanning the door, waiting for the person to come to his table. He was pretty sure they had more information on him than he wanted them to have, but that was another problem for another day. First, it was to deal with the in Infinity Group and see what their deal was, and why him?
MAYA: Gino’s had been staple of Metropolis when Maya had been given the address well the location she knew exactly where she would be heading. She informed Tim that she looked forward to meeting him in person. She truly was a people person. She was in human resources. Well, she would say human resources, but she was more than just HR she was also in PR it seemed that in her position the two roles went hand in hand. She understood the need for meeting somewhere as obscure as Gino’s. He was still unsure about taking the position. He probably wanted to know what type of company that he was working for and what type of work they did. It was all over the web and Maya was always on the lookout for fresh talent.
While he sat there a taxi pulled up outside and a woman pushed the door open yelling at the driver who had seemingly given her far too much trouble. She drew her bag out slamming it on top of the car while offering several rather rude gestures. She went as far as to kick the car’s door turning abruptly and made her way into the Gino’s. She was wearing a pair of sunglasses and she began looking around for a moment while smoothing out her hair. After scanning the room she found herself looking directly at time approaching him with bit of annoyed look her face. She was a portly woman that made her way towards him towards him.
“You’re a little shorter than I thought, younger too. How old are you? You better be eighteen, because if you’re not I don’t have time to get drug down to the 10th because I’ve been soliciting minors…” She looked him over again and pulled out her compact a little. “My name’s Celeste. So are you going to be a gentleman and pull out my chair or do I have to do it myself. If that’s the case let’s just go and get it over with. Half now, half later, but I don’t want no funny business. I am not freak. I’m a professional. Aright?”
She was a professional something one might say, but there was a sound behind Celeste. It was the sound of someone clearing their throat. When Celeste turned she and Tim found a far more professional looking woman dressed appropriately. She had a pair of sunglasses on and attaché case in her hand. She smiled over towards Celeste then towards Tim.
“I believe you have the wrong table, Miss. I believe the person that you’re looking for is back there.” She motioned her eyes as they appeared from the sunglasses as they slipped down slightly with the motion of her head.
In the corner was someone who looked more scared than anything else. “Trust me if Mr. Drake requires your services I’ll be the first to contact you.”
Celeste looked Maya up and down for a moment before turning back to Tim. “Jail bait looking..” She muttered walking off to meet her real “date”.
Maya smiled setting her case into the chair adjacent to the one she was going to sit in. “She’s certainly has a color personality.” There was a light laugh before she extended her had to Tim. “Maya Evans, Human Resources for the Infinity Group. Pleasure to meet you finally, Mr. Drake.”
TIM: Well, this was most certainly interesting. Least to say, Tim was silent for a few minutes as he listened to her rant and rave and finally introduce herself as Celeste. Apparently he looked old enough to be mistaken for a client. Giving a bit of a grin as he was about to say something when Maya excused the woman. Lifting a brow, he'd give her a smile as he turned to watch her walk off to her 'date'. Shaking his head, he'd shrug and give her a firm handshake "Believe it or not, it's not the first time its happened." grinning as he nodded.
"Nice to meet you too.." trailing off as he leaned slightly against the table. Curious as to why this woman was meeting him. Well, he knew WHY. But not… WHY. There was something weird about this group, on the outside they seemed normal enough. Even when asking his hacker buddies, they all pretty much told him the same thing. "So… I've read up on your company and it seems like you have a good deal going. I guess the question begs. What is it that you need help with?" Tim wasn't exactly the job like material, and considering where she's from. It's probably all suits and ties.
Tim didn't have a suit and or tie.
"And please, call me Tim. Everybody else does…" giving her a bit of a smile, so. The question still begged, what the hell do they want with him?
MAYA: "Of course," she replied with a smile. There was definitely an accent. British perhaps, but it wasn't as pronounced as it once was. She brushed her hair back and looked towards the waiter as he approached. "Glass of water with a wedge of lemon please and I'll have cup of coffee afterwards." She motioned to Tim to see if he wanted anything. She would say that he chose this place because of the cuisine, but Maya knew better. It was out of the way. She almost wanted to chuckle at his actions, but she did suppose had a reason to be curious.
The Infinity Group was global company based in the UK. However as she had told him they dealt directly in IT, which mean that they did several things, one of which was place people. Sometimes they had someone come in due a bit of testing and other times they went online to see if they could find an applicant that would fit the needs of their particular client. Yes they did a bit of head hunting, but they were good at filling the requested requirements.
This would be no different.
"You are asking the wrong question, Tim. It is not why you. It is why not you? You're gifted. I understand that you haven't received a traditional education, but you're well educated, young and you have the drive. That is exactly the type of person that we're looking for. Someone with the drive, knowledge and vision to see this project through. Simple as that. You seemed quite well versed in the various languages that are currently being utilized in the industry. You work long hours already why not take yourself to the next level. Guaranteed compensation, benefits while you're working on the project, and inside track on where the world is heading like you don't already know, but even more you have a chance to help push the envelope even further without having to worry about getting your hand slapped, because someone doesn't think appreciate the type of work that you do. Dream come true it seems. A little good to be true, but should I be penalized for doing my part to help seek out the innovators?" She shrugged while reaching for her attache case.
Brushing her hair from her face she was far from flustered she was the picture of calm while she pulled out an iPad followed by a folder setting them both on the table.
"Are you concerned that this would bring you back on the grid?"
TIM: Listening to her, he'd take a sip of his water thinking about what she was saying. Being able to do what he did, without having his hands slapped. AND he was going to get paid for it? Well, that does sound too good to be true. "Well, that's part of it. But if I'm not getting my hand slapped for these services, then I shouldn't care because I'm assuming you have the reasons to need a security expert." accurate description, don't you think?
"I'm not afraid of being on, or off the grid. I can make it work for me. I do have my reasons for secrecy though. If I may ask… How did you find me? I'm not exactly in the yellow pages, you know." Tim had ordered himself a small pizza with a soda. Once she ordered, he would continue leaning against the table. "You mentioned in the e-mail that you would be able to compensate me… how much are we looking at?" Tim was curious at how much they were going to offer him, he was pretty much assuming that he'd be at their beck and call when they needed him. She was certainly a people person. That was for sure.
Glancing over the iPad and the folder she brought out, he'd simply lift a brow then narrow his eyes slightly to read the top of the folder and tag. So, Global IT, huh? Wondered what they really did. Guess he'll find out once they sign whatever she needed him to sign. Though, Tim was going to make sure he asks all the right questions. Wouldn't any other paranoid hacker?
MAYA: "Getting your hand slapped would involve accessing systems that you should not be accessing. The Infinity Group does not pay people to access information that would be otherwise restricted to individuals outside of the organization or company. When people ask for the best and feel that have not acquired the best they turn to us to find the best. Sometimes hackers are employed to do testing on code, testing on logical security and sometimes they are employed to get around problems that other individuals in the same field are not able to because they trap themselves in certain boxes. They next big discovery isn't made playing itself. I'm not advocating to play fast and loose with the rules, but sometimes it is what is until it isn't and it isn't until someone says it's so because they have found or discovered the next big thing." She took a sip of water then added a bit of lemon from the wedge and took another sip.
There was nothing for her, because she wasn't hungry. She was here to talk business and time is money. Reaching for the iPad she slid her fingers along the screen until she found what she was looking for and flipped it over to show Tim. It was lines and lines of code. He would recognize it as some more of the more advance programming that was done to secure various databases.
"We need someone to look this over and tell us where the obvious and not so obvious gaps exist. We need someone that might be able to design better protocols and algorithms that will close the gaps as needed. However, that brings me to a question. Are you only focused in security or are you good with other systems." She flipped the iPad over and pulled up a file flipping through it with a touch of a finger as she kept it facing her. She was looking over the file that they were building for him.
"You ask around, Tim, and eventually supplies you with the information that you're searching for. You here a few rumors here and there and you've cracked a few databases in your time. Some of which landed you in a bit of a trouble here and there. Now I will have to say that type of work will need to be not so much discontinued, but we will require a good amount of your time so it could decrease the amount of time that you will be able to work on some of your more personal projects I suspect, but it's all about time management, no?" She smiled and and began to let her fingers move along the iPad.
"There is a certain amount of risk that is associated with approaching individuals in your position. However, we find that the benefits outweigh the risk and there is a significant return on investment that occurs as a result." Maya felt that she was being as open as she could. He had reviewed the information on their website and it was completely legitimate work.
"As for compensation, that's a tricky thing. There's a few questions that I have to ask. Given your age have you pursued becoming an emancipated minor? You have to remember that once you begin to draw a check we will have to draw up the official paper work meaning that we will have to file it with the government in terms of taxes and other deductions that would come out of your check. If you're not an emancipated minor that could prove to be difficult. As we want this to occur with incident I would suggest against trying to solve the problem as someone with your talents might."
Reaching for attache case again she produced a card with a lawyer's name. "She's located in Metropolis and has worked with us before. She can assist with helping you to become an emancipated minor that's if your parents are alive. If not then you can still become one. We need to ensure that you're able to take care for yourself in a way that the government will not object two." She produced two more cards.
"This is a realtor. I would suggest an apartment. You don't look like a white picket fences type. You may even consider enrolling at Metropolis University. It would be good to hear during discussions about becoming an emancipated minor. I'm not saying full time, but classes here and there, just something to think about. This card is for you to take the concierge at the Halldorf. They’ll give you a room that will be billed to the Infinity Group until you get something more permanent. You’ll have two weeks to get that done. I’d prefer a week it is a buyer’s market.”
She couldn’t help the smile that came after that. Was it a heavy pitch? Maybbe, but it was one that seemed like a no brainer.
“Before you think that another shoe is going to drop it isn’t, Tim. This is what we do. Sometimes we do aggressively pursue raw talent like you because it helps build our prestige. If we cultivate new talent like yours and are able to include you in our portfolio in the resources it allows us to increase our market share in the IT sector. I’m not saying that we go after everyone like this, no, but there are clients that do need someone that is able to step in and go without having to be brought up to speed in week or two months. They need to hit the ground running. There is need and desire for that. If our clients did this themselves then they would have to take time to vet individuals and that could take a good deal of time. We allow them to focus on their core business, but offering our services and resources to them. People are an asset and in order to get a good return on assets we have to make good investments so rather than see this as a too good to be true see this as the Infinity Group looking at a plot of land that has potential and willing to work with it until the potential is realized and the returns acquired.”
She had not discussed compensation because she wanted him to think this over. She also wanted to ensure that she answered his questions and addressed his concerns.
TIM: Well.
What a pitch! But Tim was still skeptical about all this. Working with code, within databases. It seemed he was going to be a legal hacker of sorts for their clients. "Sounds good and everything. But while I don't mind looking at code, finding gaps and all that. I'd need to know what the code is for also. If it's to protect a confidential file, or if it's to hide a name within the file. I can look code all day long, but in order to make it work great. I'll need to know what I'm dealing with." Tim wasn't going to turn down free food. It wasn't like him to do so.
This was all happening so fast… they wanted him to become an emancipated minor. This was all some heavy duty stuff. "What kind of clients would I be working … with? for? And what would I be doing exactly? Like I said earlier, I don't mind looking at code. But I need to know everything upfront if I'm going to create a suitable security system." licking his lips slightly as he took a sip of his water. "I haven't had the need to become an emancipated minor. You know, that whole money and being homeless thing got in the way. And my parents aren't around, no family either. Just me." looking over the cards she produced, it was interesting.
So, no hacking, and no hacking with the group. So… what did they want really? There seemed to be more than the eye on this. But how could he refuse such an offer? It was what he needed. "I'll do whatever you ask, Ms. Evans. I just need to know a few things first. As you can understand, I'm a little hesitant. I mean, this is a lot to throw at me all at once. For the last 3 Years I've been learning the streets, how to build a computer from spares. Now, all the sudden this big powerful firm wants me to join their ranks and become a citizen of society? Not only that, but they want me to get an apartment, giving me a week or two at one of Metropolis' best hotels… and they're paying me? I don't want to sound skeptical. But… can you see where I'm coming from?" asking.
"I just need to know, why me? I know you told me already. But I'm no better than some of the other hackers out there." yeah, he was downplaying his skill. "So, please do excuse me for not jumping for joy and doing a touch down dance…. it's really sounding to good to be true. I just… want some affirmation that this is all true. I do hope you see where I'm coming from…"
MAYA: "You'll be meeting with a project manager for the assignment that we have in mind for you. Mind you that you will have to sign a confidentiality and non disclosure agreement if you accept the offer. As for why you. Think about all the details you supplied right then and there. You put a system together from spares. You've learned while on the streets and you've been able to come as far as you have. That isn't something that you don't overlook, Tim. I understand the caution, but what makes you think we're not reaching out to you're fellow and rival hackers." She shook her head a little knowing that it was a lot to take in, but it was also good business sense.
"There's only so much information about the actual assignment due to the sensitive nature. I can assure you that your time and talent will be appreciated, by the Infinity Group and the client, which is S.T.A.R. Labs. We were contacted several weeks ago about having an outside third party do some security testing. There is additional work that will come your way, Tim, but first they want to see how you do with the security testing. They'll also want to see if you are a good match for the work that they want you to do. You won't be working solo on the project that much I know, but you have a unique skill set that isn't always readily available, because not everyone is going to walk the streets and find a programmer of your nature to do the requested work. No they're going to want some assurances. So that's where the Infinity Group steps in to begin looking through who might best meet our and our client’s needs. The better you perform the more work you will receive." It was as simple as that.
"The type of information you want I can't give you because that isn't our job. We don't get work and pass it to you. Sometimes you work on site or in house. Sometimes you work remotely. We don't have offices where people are crunching code day in and day out. Waste of real estate actually. We've found a niche in the IT market and make it work for us. I suppose if we were the authorities and simply caught you and brought you in and gave you a choice of work for us or incarceration it would be a bit more real, but we're not. We're the private sector and while there are rules we must follow we also have to think about how best to serve the market by meeting our client’s needs." She knew he was attempting to downplay his skills, but if he needed more convincing Maya did not believe she could offer much more than that.
"We're not doing anything illegal. Three weeks down the line we're not going to ask to plant a virus or do a virtual smash and grab. That would be quite damaging on our part. We live in an every changing world. Do we go outside the box yes, yes we do, but we also know that sometimes you have to change what you do to stay ahead and survive. It may be a bit unorthodox, but we have a proven track record. From what I told there are exciting projects that are coming out of S.T.A.R Labs, but not all scientists are programs. Not all engineers are computer engineers. Sometimes they need the people that we provide to help make their idea a reality. They may be able to construct the apparatus and know what they want it to do, but they might not know how to code the system to make it happen. That takes time and sometimes they need to be concerned with other details such as running calculations and models.. Sometimes they need assistance with that and why one might think they have an army of programmers at their disposal that's not always the case. Additionally sometimes they need someone to make sure that their safety and security protocols function properly as I've stated before. S.T.A.R Labs is only one client, but I think it would be a good fit." She tapped a few things into the iPad before putting it away.
"If you're not interested I can't do anything about that Tim, but if you're looking for the next great challenge then here it is. Will they toss you right into the middle of things maybe not, but it' getting your foot in the door to show them what you can do. You might even surprise yourself. As for finding you. Like I said I'm good at what I do. Has it crossed your mind that I might have had a different career before I decided to do HR for Infinity Inc.?" She shrugged her shoulders.
"At least stay a few nights at the Halldorf and think it over. This is us offering you a job, a possible career. No one says you have to stay for ever. This would be your first project. At the end we can re-evaluate and decide if we should continue forward. Something to think about. If you're amenable to that then I will discuss with the Project Manager at S.T.A.R Labs set something up and see if he will meet with you. The request was to have some start as they would have to sign the NDC and CA, but I think I might be able to work some magic."
TIM: Giving a nod as he listened to her. She did have several good points, and he understood the NDC and CA's. It just made him wonder what was so confidential. And what they really were up to. "So. You're the middle man, basically, right? Clients come to you for a project, or needing something computer related, you look through your choice of candidates and select the best one for the job?" asking, figure that it was basically boiled down to. "I'll stay at the Waldorf, and I'm seriously considering your offer. You mentioned that it'd be for a week, or maybe two. Then I need an apartment, which, I understand… but, where am I going to find the money for that? In case you've forgotten. I'm a little on the living on the streets side with no real access to money. Not to sound superficial, or money grubbing. But… would I be paid upfront for the first assignment? Or would you also be taking care of that?"
It was an honest question. "And what do I need to sign, is there a contract I can look over?" she was right though, having to learn all this while on the streets was tough. But, with access to enough libraries and college libraries, you could have it all. Sure, the college stuff was done at 'Night'. But nobody was judging. "Heh, this is just a lot to take in. It sounds good enough though… just give me a few days to think this over. Like you said." This was crazy, it was more than he ever thought. Signing NDA's and CA's. The apple was just a little to red. Tim already was going to accept it, he just wanted to read the contract over and a few other things about this group before signing his soul away.
So, STAR Labs, huh? That incident on V-Day must have sparked something. He'd have to look into that, also that blogger guy. What a pain in the ass! But, what can you do? "Wow…" Tim would say with a bit of a grin as he pushed his hand through his hair. … Maybe this could work out for him in the end. He needed someone to talk about all this with…
MAYA: "We are. Like I said there are times when our clients need to focus on their core business and they need us to help assist in other areas. Sometimes we have project teams come together and manage an entire section of their business. Sometimes they need project managers sometimes they just need more specific need. Whatever the need we try to provide the resource as along it in our scope." That was pretty much what they did.
"There's a lot of overhead that can develop when someone tries to find the resources that we do and sometimes they come up short. They cut that overhead by contracting us to do that for them. If we can do it for them in the United Kingdom we can do it all over." Reaching for the folder she hand not tucked away she slid it over towards Tim.
"You’re contract is in there and some other additional information about the company and the such. Pretty much what we discussed, but who wants to read it when they can discuss it. Once you've signed I'll get the paper processed and like I said there will be a signing bonus and I believe that will be able to help you get into an apartment. Also our offer is in the packet. I think it's generous given the economy and the cost of living in Metropolis. We work on performance based pay and also they type of work that you will be doing for the client that you've been assigned to. Now given that they've focused in one area it is possible that you will see an increase if S.T.A.R Labs retains your services." She took a sip of the coffee before standing to leave.
"If there's nothing else I should be going. Another potential employee to speak with. If there are any questions my cell number and office number are on a card in the packet. Think it over get back to us within the next week. S.T.A.R Labs is waiting and I want to be able to tell them something by the middle of next week." She reached out with her hand to shake his.
"Again it was a pleasure meeting you and I hope to hear from you soon." With that Maya was on her way out of the restaurant as a black SUV with tinted windows pulled up. A driver got out to open the door for her and she slipped in. Once he was in they were off and gone.
When Tim thumbed through the packet to see about compensation he would see the offer which equaled $65,000 for the duration of the project and if services retained by S.T.A.R additional compensation would be discussed and negotiated for.
TIM: Giving her hand a shake, he would nod. "I'll contact you within the week. Thank you Ms Lewis." standing up after her, he'd watch her walk out into the black SUV with tinted windows. Really? Why couldn't they ever get a white SUV? As it rolled off with her in it, he'd sit down to take a look over the contract. This was some pretty heavy duty stuff. It seemed STAR Labs was in need of his services. But what would he be working on?
Licking his lips again, he'd have the pizza to go. It was time to go check out this hotel she was giving to him for the next couple of days. Not to mention, time to switch out phones. There were some calls he needed to make and he needed to make sure they weren't going to try and listen in on his convos. Maybe just a touch paranoid. But, it seemed legitimate enough.
Now, to go spoil himself in a hotel for a couple days…
Why not, right?
TIM: So. Today was the day he was meeting this person from Infinity Group. Whoever they were, they were big. And to reach out to him? Well, it was throwing all kinds of red flags.
