Synopsis: Taking what Dr. Jacobs said to heart Arthur meets with his colleagues to give them a little insight into his methods and reasoning. Arthur goes even further by challenging his colleagues to come forth with truly remarkable and forward thinking ideas so they can begin to work together to remind the world why S.T.A.R Labs exists as they are a group of innovators. However Dr. Jacobs reminds Arthur that his enthusiasm while appreciated should not detract from the work that they are doing currently. Seeing that Jacobs means to rein him in Arthur reminds him that as a leader Jacobs must encourage allowing the staff to take chances or risk becoming complacent as Jacob has and he should not let professional jealousy get in the way of innovation.
Arthur had a few days to think over what he and Dr. Jacobs discussed and instead of rushing right in the next day and telling his fellow colleagues what he thought of them or what he believed they should be doing he took a day or two off to relax. He was capable he wanted to remind himself if he pushed them to hard then they probably would break and where would that get him? He would be branded as someone that was incapable of working with others. That would make it difficult to get any work in his field and he didn’t need that especially when he was just beginning to make a name for himself, not that he needed to work too hard given who his parents were. There were so many avenues open to him, but he wanted to achieve success on his own merits not upon the backs of his parents.
------
Sure he would grease someone’s palm when he needed to, but right now he was exactly where he wanted to be. If there was a regret it was that his father wasn’t alive to witness this. Then again of the old man had been alive he’d probably curse the day that Arthur returned to the states. He knew that his father enjoyed the fact that he was tucked away somewhere in a lab in Europe while he was completing his doctoral work. Out of sight, out of mind they say and that’s the way Arthur’s father preferred it. The less he heard about his son, the better it meant that he wasn’t doing anything that could be traced back to him while he did his work.
His work, Arthur’s father was passionate about it especially since the metas began to appear here and there. There was a deep concern on what that meant for normal humans. They were seen as reckless and unstable, people that should be policed rather than left to their own devices. One wondered where Ambassador Light got that idea. While most did, Arthur did not. He knew full well when and where his father began to develop his ideas on how those that found themselves to be more than human should be treated.
However, that wasn’t the theme of the day. Anger and rage needed to be tucked away so he focused upon his mother, Linda Manier. That was the person that he needed to focus upon instead of his father. His father wasn’t the only one that inspired people. She was respected scientist and astronaut. She was a pioneer. That’s what he would hear all the time. Even when he came to study at the university he would hear things, he was a legacy, his mother had made name for herself here.
He was never called out, but he knew there were eyes on him, people wanting him to succeed others wanting him to fail. All Arthur wanted to do was make a name for himself, but there was a part of him that wanted to make his mother proud. Though her life had been cut short she had left her mark on the world and on Arthur in more ways than one. He would never forget that it allowed him to remember the risks of being a pioneer and a visionary, but it also reminded him that sometimes risks were worth taking. You couldn’t always play it safe. Safe didn’t always cut it. If you wanted greatness then sometimes you had to be willing to play the game and risk the odds.
With that in mind today would be a brand new day. He wouldn’t look back to what happened before he would only focus on moving forward and making the rest of his time at S.T.A.R Labs an enjoyable experience. That is what he promised Dr. Jacobs that he would be a team player that he would reach out to his colleagues and share.
He would invite them into his world and hopefully share some of the ideas that had begun to develop over the last year. Of course that meant that he should extend an olive branch of sorts to the rest of his colleagues in his department. Not his favorite thing to do, but if there was something to be said for Lights it was that they always had something up their sleeve a project in works. Something that would help change the world at least that is the way they saw it. It began as a seed and quickly bloomed into a full blown idea and that’s exactly what he had. Not that he would say that this was the first time that this idea has come up it wasn’t. It had been discussed over and over tossed about from one generation to the next, but for some reason Arthur believed it was doable. This was what he was all about. This is what he studied it was about making an idea, a dream a reality.
Sometimes it wasn’t about doing the possible, it was about doing the impossible. It was about reaching out for the fantastic and making it real which is why he stepped into the conference room he was smiling. Smiling this had to be a first since had arrived. True Arthur was excited to walk the corridors of S.T.A.R Labs, but most if not all his colleagues had never seen him smile. However, at the moment that is exactly what he was doing he smiling and moving towards the head of the table, not because that was where his place was, but it’s where he wanted to be.
“Good morning everyone I know it’s early and people haven’t raced to get that first cup of coffee, but I want to thank you all for taking the time to attend today’s meeting. I was hoping to have a presentation ready, but I think it’s better to have a cold read of sorts rather than show you something. I want share with you something that I have been looked into off and on since before my academic career began. College that is, though my father might say otherwise, but before I travel down that route I want to discuss some of my most recent behavior, which I have been told in so many words has been abominable.”
He looked out amongst his colleagues a few who looked way others who nodded a bit in agreement.
“I think that would be the best word to describe it. A bit detestable and the sort, and I wish I could say that I am sorry, but it is difficult when it’s the way that I’ve been programmed. It truly is the way that I’m wired. I have a thirst that can’t be quenched. I want to be the best. I have to be the best. I will not accept anything but the best from myself and the people that I work with. I’m at S.T.A.R Labs we are the best. There is no doubt in my mind that we are the best research and development laboratory out there. I don’t care what they say in Europe or Asia when people want the best they come to us. When you were in college or even high school you dreamed about being here. Not because we do subpar work, but we do the best work and we continue to push the envelope for both the private and public sectors. We don’t hold back what we’re doing to make a profit we do it because we want to enrich our lives and the people that share the world with us and if that means that I have to push everyone around me to be better then I will and I am not sorry for that.”
He had something prepared in his mind. He knew what he was going to say and that went out the window the moment he walked through the door.
“I know that many of us are not experienced working in that type of environment, but that’s what got me through undergrad and my post grad work. I had to push myself, because if I didn’t I wouldn’t get her. I wouldn’t back as a fellow. I was an intern once, but now I’m back with a chance to have my ideas become a reality. That’s why we’re all here to research, develop and produce. Anything else then you shouldn’t be here. If you’re looking a mark on your record but have nothing meaningful to contribute then you’ve come to the wrong place. S.T.A.R Labs is here to remind people that there are scientists, researches, engineers who are attempting to create a better quality of life for the public at large. We’re here to keep everyone else in our field on their toes.” He turned to motion to the ever present tower that represented their main competition and the company that usually stole the best and brightest.
“Luthor is always going to be there, but we’re not in his shadow. We’re only in his shadow if we allow ourselves to be. We’re here because we want to show the world that we have something to contribute and if you want me to be sorry for that I can’t. I can apologize, because it is the right thing to do, but I’m not sorry. This is exactly why were invited here and why we all took positions with STAR Labs. It’s because want to challenge one another and some days it’s going to be pretty and some days we might be full on horrors, but if you think for a moment that I don’t want to work with each and every one of you, you’re wrong. I do. I want to change the world. There hasn’t been a time in history when we were capable of doing so much if we allowed ourselves to realize our greatness and seize rather than let it slip through our fingers. Any one of us is capable of bringing something to the table that would change the world.”
That was the challenge. That is what he was going to look to them for. He wasn’t going to come hat and hand and tell everyone that he was sorry for what he said or what he did, because it wasn’t Arthur’s way. If they were mad let them be mad, but at least they were something.
“I challenge you to show me and everyone else why you want to be here. We all deserve more than words. We want action. We want ideas and want those ideas to become something viable. We make the impossible happen. This is no different from when we were in college. All those ideas. All those theories it’s time to make them or break them. It’s time to show everyone why we’re in Metropolis. It’s time to remind the world why S.T.A.R Labs exist and I’ll be the first to tell you I have an idea. I have an idea that’s going to change the world, but I want to know if you’re with me or not, because if you’re with me then hear me out. You want in. You want me to share what is that I’ve been doing then trust me and I’ll trust you and I’ll help give you a Metropolis unlike you’ve ever seen before and a S.T.A.R Labs that will eclipse every other research facility out there.”
Several hours later Arthur found himself in Jacob’s office being scrutinized. True he had not done a 180 degree turn. Arthur thought he provided a well thought out reason and did not compromise himself by apologizing and begging for forgiveness. Forgiveness was the furthest thing from his mind He would not let his natural behavior be suppressed, because he walked over people’s feelings. Arthur felt that he gave the best explanation possible it was up to his colleagues to understand or not understand. They weren’t immortal, they were not going to live forever, but if they wanted to make their marks then they were going to need someone that was going to help them focus and push them in the direction he felt they all wanted to go.
“What were you thinking? I asked you to make peace with them not get them all worked up. Not everyone was impressed with your, “This is not an apology” speech. Some were offended and feel that you overstepped your bounds.”
Arthur remained seated while Dr. Jacobs explained the situation and he could not help, but smile across over at him which he knew was not thing to do at the moment however it was the only thing that he could do. Drawing his fingers through his hair he thought about for a moment went over what he said carefully, but never once did he stop smiling. Perhaps Jacobs felt threatened that he was never to do what he did. It was just words, but Arthur knew from experience the power of words. What they were capable of and how they could change the lives of the people they were shared with.
It was a well learned lesson from his father, he might even consider it a valuable one, one of many, but this wasn’t about his father. This was about him. This wasn’t about the past it was about the future.
“This facility was established to help move humanity into the future and the only way that we are going to continue to move forward is about embracing the ideas that brought each and every scientist and research to S.T.A.R Labs. Will all the ideas be great and possible? No, but there would be ideas and we would move forward. Sometimes to \encourage we have to push. Not all the tools of motivation lead to projects that were wrapped up in pretty little bows.”
Did he regret it? Not in the least he was being frank with Dr. Jacobs, it seemed the way that his supervisor preferred it. Everyone had a supervisor unless you were at the top of the pyramid. Arthur had a plan, five year, ten year it did not matter, but there was a plan. He was on the fast track and if he wanted to continue to move forward then he was going to have to ensure that the people he was working with was moving in the same direction and at the same speed that he was.
“Your concern is that the assignments that you’ve given them will go unmonitored that your own projects will take a back seat to their own. Simply put they should be able to do both. Not to the point that they jeopardize your work and their own, but they should be able to manage their time more effectively. If you have a few weak links it’s time to dismiss those aren’t capable of doing more than a couple of tasks at times. It also means that some of the projects that are not yielding the results that you expected should be shifted. Not everything that you wish to work should be given the higher priority.”
Shrugging he turned his eyes towards the windows then back to Dr. Jacobs.
“The projects that your colleagues have been assigned have been reviewed carefully and given the correct priority according the process that has been established. If you are unwilling and unable to follow our protocols then perhaps…” He left it open ended allowing Arthur to draw his own conclusions.
“So, let’s review for my own understanding. If I don’t monitor what I say with my colleague I risk alienating them and jeopardizing my own position. However, any attempts in encouraging them and reminding them why we wanted to pursue positions here will do the same exact thing? I don’t know, Dr. Jacobs, I find then entire matter baffling. You tell me one thing and now you’re telling me another. I didn’t come here to observe and write down notes on another person’s experiment that is wasting valuable resources. Everyone here are resources and they should be used effectively. We are this facilities best resources we have ideas. Ideas that have merit and I was brought here for the solar radiation work that I’ve done specifically the photovoltaic work. I have a project that I believe will change everything the world at large knows, but in order to make that happen I need people who are striving for the best not striving for okay. I would hope that you would want the same thing.”
It was simple as that. He would hope that people would be on board with him that they would support him in his research. “I want to improve what is known. I don’t want to reinvent the wheel. I want to improve it and the only way it’s going to improve is if we have innovators not someone who’s doing something that’s tried and tested. It’s time to take some of the theory and ideas and make them realities. We are a think tank we are a world class research facility.” How many times was he going to have to say that?
“We need to move forward not backward. I have a project and it’s going to take time, but if it is going to get off the ground, but for that to happen I have to know that the people I’m working with are capable that they’re visionaries that they won’t rest on their laurels, that they won’t look at me and think that I am mental. I cannot work with people like that, but I also cannot be so self-involved to believe that they do not have something to contribute, but I need them, I want them at their best,” he shared with him. His eyes never left Dr. Jacobs, because he wanted this to weigh on the man’s mind. He wanted him to be sure what he was doing what he was threatening Arthur with.
“You continue to think that you’re negative review will send me packing, but you have to realize that you would lose so much potential not in me but in all of the scientists here. You would be perceived as being threatened which I think you are. You’ve become seasoned, you’ve won awards and accolades, but you’re coasting Dr. Jacob which is why you’re scared of anyone around you that they will become the new star. The one that will get published. Have you looked at anything that your subordinates have published? What they’ve contributed to? I will admit that I dream big, but sometimes we all have to be brought back down to earth to remember that bigger isn’t always better at least not in the start. You were selected for your position because you the board wanted you to cultivate others, but you’re doing anything but that unless I am imagining this which is not the case.”
He knew that Jacobs was offended, but the fact that the man was not objecting as often as he should meant that he struck a chord. Probably not the one Jacobs was hoping for, but there it was.
“My performance is not the one that you should be concerned one. Perhaps a bit of self-evaluation is needed. I meant no disrespect when I spoke with my colleagues. I only meant to impart my reasoning and despite some of the objections that you received I believe most of the staff was receptive. Dare I say, reinvigorated? This is not the time to let this facility fade into the shadows of Luthor’s company. This is the time to remind the world why we are here with the brightest minds working to bring scientific advances to both the private and public sectors. It’s time to take the next big leap forward, but if you are intending on standing in my way then things are likely to get messy and that is the last thing either of us want, Dr. Jacobs I assure you.”
Hopefully this would be the last time that they would have this conversation. If it happened again he was going to have to do something about the good Dr. Jacobs.
Arthur had a few days to think over what he and Dr. Jacobs discussed and instead of rushing right in the next day and telling his fellow colleagues what he thought of them or what he believed they should be doing he took a day or two off to relax.
Jacobs.
