"Arthur we asked you here, because of the research that you've done with electromagnetic radiation. We're not doubting the work you’re doing or your intentions.” Of course they weren’t they couldn’t find fault in his work. No one could. No one was as dedicated as Arthur was, but the problem was that he always felt that someone was attempting to hold him back. Telling him to slow down when they should excel. They should be moving forward not backwards. The stagnation that seems to occur in the states was frustrating. He couldn’t believe he was having this conversation. It would have been the first time, but it wasn’t one that he had expected to have so soon.
“That being said we do have problems with is your demeanor. The way that you treat your colleagues can use some adjusting. We’re all on the same team here, Arthur." Of course they had problems because they didn’t have it in them to tell the people what they needed to hear. They needed to be told when they were doing something incorrectly, and they needed to follow proper procedure. Not trying to kiss up and tell him how excited they were about working with him. If they wanted to display their excitement then it should in their work not in their words.
Arthur glanced over at his department head also known as his supervisor as he continued to advise him how his actions weren’t good for morale. He seemed quite unimpressed with the man's speech. He had heard it before. It's one of the reasons why he preferred to work alone. It made things easier. He worked better when working alone or with people that understood the need to push themselves.
"They don't understand the theories or the equations. I don't have time to teach it to them. I expect anyone that's working for an organization of this caliber to grasp the information, Dr. Jacobs. I'm the fellow if I remember correctly. These are supposed to be some of the most brilliant minds of the world." He tried his best not to sound annoyed, but it was difficult. He was coming off from speaking with his father's lawyer it wasn't a pleasant conversation. He was doing his best to settle the estate and put it behind him.
"I understand that you're used to working alone, Arthur, but you have to remember that sometimes when we work together we bring new ideas to the forefront. Talk to them not at them. I know how it goes, I've done it myself. I just want to shoot for the stars, but I have to come back a little and make sure that everyone's on board. The answers are out there and I'm pretty sure that you've gotten a few them already, but you wouldn't be here if you had them all. It would be a waste of your time."
Was he annoyed? Beyond belief, but he wasn't going to say it, though his eyes were ready to do something that Jacob's wasn't ready for. Here Arthur could continue to do the research that he started when he got into college. He would have unrestricted access to the technology that he needed to test the limits of what he could do. People were getting suspicious in Europe. It seemed the long hours, the secrecy and constant need for privacy wasn’t sitting well with some of the investors. They wanted results he provided them with results. He more than tripled the efficiency of the solar cells that he constructed for the firm. However some of the purchases he made seemed to be more tailored towards personal research rather than furthering the research of alternative energy. There were things that he asked for then demanded, some believed him to be eccentric. Some say that the brilliant are a bit eccentric perhaps a bit mad. Arthur didn't care one way or another.
"If you're not able to change your attitude then I feel that at the end of the year we will not be inviting you back, and I think that would do a disservice to not only S.T.A.R Labs, but yourself as well. I can't tell you to do a complete one eighty, but I can ask you try. Let us in. Believe me we all want to share in the genius they want to know what we lobbied so hard to get you here. I understand that you want to inspire, Doctor Light, but there are better ways of doing it. Excellence should be expected, but demanding in the way you are won’t get you what you desire."
There was a brief flash in the depths of Arthur’s mind about how he could truly dazzle Doctor Jacobs. He displayed the marvelous abilities that he had gained through some remarkable chance of fate. Gifts that people like his mother and her colleagues did not understand until it was too late. She lost her life because of it but for some reason he did not. He was different from her, stronger and he didn’t shy away from it. He didn’t hide away as his father has hoped. He reveled in it, but when it became clear that he would be persecuted because of it he knew that he had to become selective about who he pulled into the world that he was shaping for himself. Until now there had been no one and it seemed that it would continue that way as he continued to work with others. If things go as planned and he was finally able to access his father’s estate then he would be able to change how things were done. He would not have to depend on others, but there was something to be said about working for facilities such as S.T.A.R Labs.
With that in mind Arthur smiled over at Jacobs when the man gave him an expectant look. Jacobs wanted him to fall in line and Arthur would do that. It was all for show of course. Something he had learned to do long ago. His father taught him how every time they spoke up until they day he died.
It was true that his level of excitement couldn't be match, nor could his drive, but he had a personal stake in it. He lived it. He breathed it. He was it. It ran along his spine and his skin. There were times he thought he could taste it. He could feel it passing through him and around him. The sensations that occurred inside of him were quite intense and holding it in was constant struggle; a constant battle to be something that he was not because he did not want to become someone’s project or journal article to make their career.
Those were the things that they did not understand nor did they comprehend the fact that the more Arthur learned the better he became. He spent most of his life being held back and he was about to let those stammering idiots that called themselves his colleagues stand in his way. However, he wasn't about his attitude cost him this opportunity. He remembered the first time when he stepped into S.T.A.R labs, he interned during his junior and senior year of college at Metropolis University. He knew that he would eventually return here, so like before he let everything sink down beneath the surface. He would keep himself in good standing. This was a long term project. Going overseas provided him a welcomed relief from the constant watching and questioning, but only for a moment. It seemed that he would find it no matter where he went save working in solitude. His work was meant to be shared with the world not hidden away in some random facility so close to the edge of the world that it was destined to fade into obscurity. When the time was where he would he would let who he was come up to the surface. No more holding back. No more rules.
Arthur desired a world where he was able to do what he, and not be was being saddled with rules. That wasn't going to do. He was going to have to find a way around them. Though, it wouldn't be the first time that he would have to modify his behavior he wasn't going to go quietly into the dark. If anything he was going to share with the others what it was that he was capable of, and if they couldn't keep then there would have to be some staffing adjustments.
"I know it's not your cup of tea, but do you think you can try to be a team player,” Dr. Jacobs asked him finally.
Arthur thought on it for a second or two before nodding providing the acquiescence that his department head desired. "I can do that. We can ill afford another mistake like we had the other night. Nothing’s been confirmed, but there’s rumors that there’s going to be an investigation into the events that occurred on the night in question. There is something to be said for taking the time to do things right the first time.”
It was something to consider among other things. Besides the last thing he wanted to do was lose his position because he was not patient enough to play by the rules however he thought it might be best if he invest outside support. He would need to look into that.
“I understand that not everyone can appreciate the way I work, but perhaps it falls upon me to help inspire if I intend to lead. Everyone wants to be a part of the magic one might say. However if I prevent my colleagues from seeing just how the magic works I think they will feel slighted and that is not my intention.” He offered a conciliatory nod in the direction of Dr. Jacobs. “Additionally I tend to forget that a team is only as strong as it’s project leader and the faith that the team has in that leader. It’s one of the reasons why I wanted to return to STAR Labs to remember the type of work that can be accomplished when one works with a team as opposed to solitary work. I’ve spent years working on my research now is the time to share it and see what others can bring to the table. I think in the end everyone will come to understand the passion I have for our work. I think I’ll be able to help show them that we can truly change the world."
